Structure & One Thing Self Improvement

If there?s anything I?ve been jealous of about people who live more traditional lives it?s their sense of structure. Actually, I don?t think jealous is the right word because I wouldn?t trade places.

But I think this is why entrepreneurs, freelancers, and artists are obsessed with goal setting and list making. It provides the sense of structure that we wouldn?t otherwise have. With nobody telling us what to do we have to tell ourselves.

For about 12 years now I haven?t had a real sense of structure. I?d go sleep whenever, wake up whenever (usually 7-9 hours after falling asleep), write down a list of things to do (either morning of or night before) and go at it (or sometimes ignore it completely). This list would usually include simple tasks like shopping or cleaning. Often, the idea of making a big list would be so overwhelming I wouldn?t bother.

I?ve been experimenting with less lists. Smaller lists. Different structure.

For example, I already know I have to buy food or I can?t eat so listing ?go to the store? is somewhat redundant. I still do what I?ve done for about 7 years as far as shopping lists though: when I think of something I need to buy I put it on a list. Recently, I ?outsourced? this. I buy a few things quite regularly from a small health food store (?winki Trzy!) and asked them if I could place a standing order and pick it up once per week. This eliminates writing down what I need and takes care of that aspect of shopping.?Note: I could probably also get it delivered somehow and completely eliminate this task, but being that I work from home I appreciate the 20 minute roundtrip walk to pick up groceries.

And if something needs cleaning I clean it. It doesn?t need to go on any lists if it just gets done. I?ve eliminated chores from these lists.

Cluttered lists don?t do us any favors.

Long lists lull us into a false sense of accomplishment when we check off chores and small everyday tasks. I?ve also realized that trying to force myself into a structure that doesn?t work for me (e.g. going to sleep early, waking up early) stresses me out. I?ve always enjoyed the dead quiet of night for my work time and when I try to, for example, get important work done during the day at home where it?s often loud (neighbors, construction, phone) or in a coffee shop (?fucking espresso machine!?) I get anxious and unfocused.

Instead of trying to force traditional structure I?ve been changing focus.

One Thing Productivity

I?ve been focusing on one goal per day ? or what I?ve been calling my One Thing. Some days this might be as simple as ?write 2 pages for a book.? Some days it might be ?figure out?xCode?compiling errors.? And sometimes it?s something like, ?learn to play 2 new bars of Doc Watson?s?Deep River Blues.? Sometimes my One Thing only takes an hour or so, sometimes it takes a few hours (xCode compiling errors!) and sometimes it can take most of the day.

It?s not to say I won?t do anything beyond my One Thing. But One Thing is most important.

My criteria for my One Thing is that it must make a step towards improving myself or my business acumen. (Sometimes these are one and the same.) If I?m working on a big project I can break down the smaller pieces into One Thing each (like the fingerstyle blues, for example).

This One Thing productivity method is essentially a hybrid of Leo Babauta?s ?No Goals? (complete lack of structure doesn?t work for me) and traditional goal setting (gets far too muddled and overwhelming to be effective).

At the end of the day if I accomplish my One Thing I can think to myself: ?Karol, you?ve improved today. You rock.? The nice?thing?is the barometer is your own. You don?t have to look at what other people are working on and compare yourself to that. It?s easy to get into that loop and lose sense of self and reality.

Jimmy Valvano?once said?to have a ?heck of a day? you have to laugh, think, and cry. I like that list, but would add just one thing (!) to it: improve.

The Obamas' Thanksgiving Menu

As for many Americans, Thanksgiving is a time of tradition at the White House. But the Obama family has taken it a little more literally, eating basically the same thing each year since 2009.

An organic, brine-soaked roast turkey and honey-baked ham make the main courses. There are two kinds of stuffing: cornbread and oyster. Macaroni and cheese, greens, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes and green-bean casserole round out the sides.

The Obamas don't skimp on dessert. Six pies make a roulette of sweets for diners. Apple, cherry, banana cream, sweet potato and huckleberry are joined by what is reportedly the president's favorite: pumpkin.

PHOTOS: Thanksgiving Traditions at the White House

Foodies who want to replicate the feast on their own are in luck. The White House's top chef, Cristeta Comerford, shared some of the recipes in an interview with the Washington Post. Having cooked for each president since Clinton, the former "Iron Chef America" guest star warns would-be cooks to have plenty of free time; the turkey alone requires 12 hours of marinating.

The Obamas' dinner guests consist of a closely guarded list of family and friends, some going back to their days in Chicago.

ABC News' Serena Marshall contributed to this report.

Successful Web-Based Marketing Requires More Than Just Great ...

by Mark under Affiliate Marketing, Article Directories, Article Marketing, Blogging, Content Marketing, Copywriting, Email Marketing, Internet Marketing, Marketing, Niche Marketing, SEM Blog, SEO & SEM, Small Business Marketing, Traffic Generation, Web Marketing, Webmasters [ Link to this article ] [ Republish this article ] [ Read Comments ] [ Comment on this article ]

I have been dabbling in web and internet marketing for a while now and I have really come to appreciate the fact that this entire process actually has a pretty steep learning curve.

Running a web-based business as either a product or service owner or as an affiliate for someone else?s product or service takes hard work and patience. Actually, it takes lots of patience.

Additionally, looking back at 2012 in retrospect, I can now see that patience is the most valuable quality of all, especially with all of the search engine algorithm updates.

Regardless, when it come to internet or web-based marketing, ultimately successful efforts are ultimately divided into two categories.

Category Number One ? Content Creation

Solid content is the heart of any and every successful marketing campaign. Without it, you have nothing to motivate your visitors to take action. So basically, you don?t make any money.

Great content will do three things for its readers:

  • Great Content Will FLow ? This means that the grammar, punctuation, ideas, connective phrases, and ideas will all mesh together and the reader will not be discracted by errors. Errors, be they grammatical or punctuation errors, will destroy the ability of your copy to convert.
  • Great Content Will Deliver Value ? This means that your post or article will actually deliver on the title. Nothing is worse than an article that doesn?t fulfill the promise that the title makes.
  • Great Content Will Invite Them, Not Leave Them Hanging ? Many copy writers like to write half an article and act like it is the entire article, when in reality it is only the first half of an article with a call to action to click thru in the bio box. Personally, I feel that this scenario is spammy. If you write an article, make it a complete article!

Of course, this is only the first step one must take if one is to be a sucessful web-based marketer. The other is promotion.

Category Number Two ? Content Promotion

I used to believe that all effort should be focused around solid content creation. Unfortunately, it takes more than just solid content, much more, and the reason is because of the fact that evwerybody has solid content. So basically, solid content is a minimum requirement.

Content promotion is just as important as having great content. Promotion, however, is not easy and takes just as much time and energy as content creation.

To sucessfully promote your content and to determine the most advantageous ways to promote it, setting up a routine is absolutely essential.

A great promotion routine for an article that you post on your blog, for example, could be as follows:

  • Social Bookmarking ? Social platforms are great for promoting your content. Pick three of your favorite social platforms and whenever you post and article to your blog or website, share it with your friends and collegues. Social sharing buttons make this easier than ever and if your content is quality content, then your friends may share it with their friends.
  • Blog Commenting On CommentLuv Blogs ? Blog commenting is a great way to drive traffic to your post or article. The CommentLuv plugin for WordPress makes sharing a link to your post very easy. Don?t worry about where or not it is a ?dofollow? link. We want traffic! All you have to do is search for ?your keyword? + ?CommentLuv? and comment on the blogs that link out. Be sure to actually read their post and leave a valuable comment. Bloggers absolutely love this and don?t mind linking uot to quality commenters. Find three high traffic blogs in your niche and subscribe to their RSS feed. This will give you constant commenting opportunities.
  • Make Your Old Articles Available For Syndication ? Once an article has burned through its ?honeymoon? period, in certain cases, it may drop in the SERP results. Hopefully, this doesn?t happen, but the cold hard truth is?many do. But, just because an article sinks in the SERP results doesn?t mean that its life is over. many people still haven?t read it. You can easily breath new life into it by making it available for syndication on top article directories. Pick three top article directories and submit your older content to them with a bio link to your site or landing page. I have had lots of success with this and still do, even despite the 2012 search engine algorithm updates.

These are just some ideas of how to promote your content without having to write more articles.

personally, I believe that your marketing efforts should be split in half, meaning that half of your time should be spent creating content and the other half should be spent promoting your content.

Bonus Content Promotion Tip

A light bulb went off in my head the other day as I was pondering the fact that some of my best converting articles were losing their popularity.

I realized that I could continue to promote them by running banner ads or a non-intrusive advertising bar that drops down from the top of your website that gently nudges your visitors to your highest converting post, article, or product.

I am very excited about this and will be using it from now on.

Stick To Your Promotional Routine

Remember, website and blog promotion is an endurance race. Having a consistent content creation and promotion schedule is the absolute fastest way to success online because it allow you to see what works and what doesn?t.

Sticking to a solid schedule will ultimately pay off for anyone who does it?you just have to stick with it.

UNIQUE research conducted by a University of Huddersfield professor confirms just how successfully the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics were designed, organised and delivered. His findings will reveal to planners of the 2016 Games in Brazil just what they must do to meet or exceed the standards set by London.

Professor David Bamford, an expert in the theory of operations management and how it can be applied to the sports arena, was granted full access to the Paralympics village in London and with his team of researchers he quizzed hundreds of athletes, seeking their views on the organisation, facilities and other aspects of the Games.

This was the largest survey that had been carried for a Paralympic Games and the responses were highly positive.

"From a service quality perspective, they were exceptionally high," said Prof Bamford. "This speaks well for the attention to detail and the design of the facilities provided at London 2012. Now the opportunity and the challenge for Brazil is how they are going to replicate this. The bar is very high indeed."

A special questionnaire was devised and a total of 250 Paralympians took part, either in face-to-face interviews or by responding online. The blend of nationalities, athletic disciplines and disabilities ensured that the findings were statistically valid.

The questions covered topics such as transport, catering, competition venues, staff, ceremonies and anti-doping procedures. Respondents attached most importance to the facilities at the Paralympics village.

Questions used the Likert scale - ranging from "dissatisfied" to "very satisfied" and 70 per cent of the responses were in the "very satisfied" range, said Professor Bamford.

"That went right across the board from the Paralympics village throughto the delivery of anti-doping services. It was an extremely positive set of feedback. And the volunteers and staff were by far the best rated of all the services. In terms of their performance, they were absolutely outstanding," he added.

International Paralympics Committee

The research project was initiated by the International Paralympics Committee (IPC) in tandem with the Manchester-based World Academy of Sport, which undertakes the education delivery of knowledge management for the IPC which included the IPC Observers Programme for future Paralympic Games organisers.

An IPC Academy Campus was instituted throughout the Games and Professor Bamford was appointed its Research Fellow. He then recruited five interns in conjunction with the IPC and WAoS to assist with the research. The team was granted complete access to the Paralympic village and competition venues while the games were in progress.

The aim of the project was to establish a benchmark for the provision of services at the Paralympics particularly in relation to infrastructure requirements and operational delivery, said Professor Bamford. His preliminary report will form part of the discussions at the official IPC Debrief on London 2012 in Rio during late November. His full report will then be available for Games organisers when they meet again in the spring of 2013, this time to look ahead to 2016 and adopt key recommendations into their planning for the next edition of the Paralympic Games.

###

Further outputs from the Athletes Client Experience Survey - as it was named will include academic papers, and case studies will be used for teaching purposes at the University of Huddersfield's Business School, where David Bamford is Professor of Operations Management.

THE NICE The Nice music review by Drawbars

5 stars One of my all time Hammond dominated favourites, this third album by the Nice is by far their best succeeded. A superior Keith Emerson can be heard in live versions at the Fillmore East in New York of their famous Rondo (an adaptation of the Brubeck Blue Rondo A La Turk and one of the greatest renditions of a Bob Dylan song "She Belongs To Me". Under the virtuoso hands of Emerson this seemingly simple song grows out to become a brilliant progressive rock composition, one of the nicest of all Nice recordings.

The album also contains the strange but great "Azrael Revisited", a beautiful jazz piano version of the disarming and touching song by the tragic Tim Hardin, an exuberant version of the final Rondo of Lalo's Symphony Espagnol Opus 21 and last but certainly not least the great own Emerson composition For Example, a very jazzy piece with some great brass arrangements added. This last composition would appear some years later in an equally brilliant version on the fifth album of the Dutch band Ekseption.

This album is so important in the history of progressive rock, because it's a huge step forward in musical regard and it already shows us a mature and highly gifted Keith Emerson, assisted on drums by an equally great Brian Davison and by a somewhat less brilliant Lee Jackson on bass, who also acts as an even somewhat less brilliant singer. Still an album that shook progressive rock history and that should belong to you!!
