UFO Waterproof Remote found floating in the company of the rich and famous

Dreams are nice. Yachts are better. So while you cling to far-flung notions that you'll ever truly know what 'money to burn' means, the Barry Dillers of our world are crisscrossing international waters, drenching models with diamonds and dropping their universal controllers in the hot tub with abandon. Rescuing these rapscallion, modern-day robber barons from the pitfalls of excess is Crestron, with its UFO Waterproof Remote made specifically for H2O hanky panky. The disc-shaped unit, which admittedly looks more like a pool toy than high-end control hub, comes encased in a rubberized shell and features a 2.8-inch display, giving Greek shipping heirs and their ilk instant access to lighting, security systems, A/V equipment and thermostats from the comforts of their sun deck jacuzzi. Alright, so the 1% aren't the company's sole market base, as the unit's also ideally positioned for use in hospitals, owing to its ability for easy sterilization. But let's be honest, the real reason this floating controller shares a frisbee-like shape is aerodynamics. All the better to hit your staff with, right Ms. Campbell? Official PR and its hydrophobic emphasis after the break.

Love Is...Some Ground Up Hamburg

Ladies, I'm going to brag on my husband today. I believe he deserves it.

The other night, we had family taco night, which we hadn't done in a while. My hubby came home from a long day at work and went to directly making dinner while I watched our daughter play in the living room.

He cooked up the hamburger for our tacos into two separate dishes; one with the taco seasoning and one without just for me because he knows I don't like the spiciness of the seasoning. Then he diced up the tomatoes for me (even though he doesn't like them himself). And spread out all the fixings that my son and I like on the table.

We took turns eating so that one of us could feed our toddler and the other could enjoy dinner while it was still warm.

When dinner was finished, I mentioned I wanted to use the extra hamburger for my lunch the next day. He apologized that there wasn't a lot of meat left since he wasn't sure how much to leave out for me that wasn't seasoned. I was a little disappointed that there was just a little bit left, and I guess he could see that in my face (though I told him it was fine, I could make do with what we had).

He went out to the pharmacy to pick up some things that I needed and came home. Then I saw him in the kitchen again cooking and asked him what he was making, thinking that maybe he was making his lunch for work ahead of time.

He told me that he was cooking hamburger.

He had stopped by the grocery store on the way home and picked up some more so that I could have it for my lunch. And he took the time to cook it up for me and store it in the fridge to save me from having to do it.

When I put together my lunch the next day, I couldn't help but smile and be reminded of the sweet thing that he did for me. It was something simple, but that simple thing was done with so much love behind it.

I am one blessed woman to be married to a man who demonstrates love every day with simple actions.

Thank you honey for loving me like that.

Concerns grow over children using tablet computers | Excitonic

?It?s a topic that really emerged in the last two years. You can?t pull it from their hands,? Warren Buckleitner, editor of Children?s Technology Review, said this week at a New York panel titled ?Baby Brains and Video Games.?

According to a late 2011 survey of 2,200 parents and children in Britain and the United States, 15 percent of kids between three and eight had used their parents? iPad. Nine percent had their own iPad, while 20 percent had their own iPod.

The same study, by the marketing agency Kids Industries, found 77 percent of parents believed that using tablets was beneficial for their children and the same number thought the gadgets helped develop creativity.

Amid warnings from some researchers that tablets can cause developmental difficulties and problems including autism or attention deficit disorder, experts at the forum recommended not rushing to judgment.

?Technology maybe fosters some things and dampens others,? Rosemarie Truglio, from the children?s TV producers Sesame Workshop, said. ?It?s definitely about balance.?

Lisa Guernsey, director of the Early Education Initiative at the New American Foundation, said that critics blaming devices like the iPad for child developmental problems should differentiate ?between a cause and an association.?

Still, Guernsey, author of ?Screen Time: How Electronic Media ? From Baby Videos to Educational Software ? Affects Your Young Child,? urged parents to establish limits on use of electronic devices.

?Can they focus on a conversation, not look a screen for 30 minutes?? she asked.

Truglio noted that ?researchers have proven they need adult-child interaction,? in addition to the electronic helper. ?Interactive doesn?t mean educational,? she said.

Annie Murphy Paul, author of ?How the Nine Months Before Birth Shape the Rest of Our Lives,? said there?s no need to panic.

?Your brain is changing all the time, each time you learn something new,? she said.

But Paul said she strictly controls her own offspring?s access to such devices and remains concerned ?about the value? for small children.

For Buckleitner, it?s all a question of balance. Don?t let the iPad become an electronic babysitter. But it can be ?a shelf of toys. It could be a lot things,? she said. ?Trust your gut.?

US Military Funds Effort to Hack Video Old Game Consoles for Chat ...

By Jermey Hsu | LiveScience | Mar. 27, 2012

Popular video game consoles such as Nintendo's Wii and Microsoft's Xbox 360 may resemble the new battlefields for national security in the eyes of the U.S. military. The U.S. Navy has begun funding a project to hack previously owned game consoles in an effort to dig up gamers' online chat room information and other stored data.

U.S. console gamers can breathe a tiny sigh of relief for now, because the current project forbids targeting "U.S. persons." Instead, the Navy wants a California-based company called Obscure Technologies to buy video game consoles bought in used overseas markets, and to create computer forensic tools capable of hacking such consoles.

"This project requires the purchasing of used video game systems outside the US in a manner that is likely to result in their containing significant and sensitive information from previous users," according to a Navy justification and approval notice issued yesterday (March 26).

Obscure Technologies apparently has plenty of experience in hacking game consoles to mine data ? the company's lead scientist had "previously reverse engineered the Microsoft Xbox," according to the Navy's notice.

"Analysis of the game systems requires specific knowledge of working with the hardware of embedded systems that have significant anti-tampering technology," the Navy notice says. "Obscure Technologies has substantial experience in working with such systems."

The Navy wants the company to not only hack "dirty" used game consoles, but also to show how to scrape "clean" data from newly bought game consoles. The new consoles being provided for such testing include a pair of Nintendo Wii consoles, a pair of Sony Playstation 3 systems, and a pair of Microsoft Xbox 360 systems, according to a project summary posted on Feb. 15.

The military isn't alone in wanting to mine data from video games, even if its focus may lean more toward tracking terrorists and enemies abroad. Both game studios and academic researchers have come up with ways to track gamer actions and behaviors during specific PC or console video games ? either for better understanding gamers as customers or for studying human behavior in the equivalent of virtual labs.

There is also nothing particularly secretive about the hacking project. The Navy contract specifies that it plans to publicize the results at conferences and publish in academic journals, as well as make open- source software from the contract available to academic researchers.

Still, the Navy does expect Obscure Technologies to deliver hardware and software capable of hacking video game consoles at the end of its $177,000, 15-month contract in July 2013. Such tools are expected to be made for the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate ? and there's no particular mention of what Homeland Security might want with them.

Tornado victims offered childcare help

Tornado victims offered childcare help

Mar 23, 2012
By STAFF

WEST LIBERTY, Ky. (BP)?Kentucky Baptists are?providing families affected by the March 2 tornado in West Liberty a nurturing place for their children during the day.

An emergency childcare unit has opened at the Red Cross shelter in the tornado-ravaged town. Trained Kentucky Baptist volunteers are providing activities and care for the children, giving parents time to take the first steps in recovery.

?? [F]amilies are coming back to the community and they need all the help we can give them as they try to move forward,? said Coy Webb, director of the Kentucky Baptist Convention Baptist Men on Missions department.

Children visiting the childcare unit receive a handmade blanket from Kentucky Baptists, with a ?label? sewn inside each blanket relaying a message of love and care.

This is the first deployment of the childcare unit launched last year by Christian County Baptist Association?s churches.

More than 100 disaster relief volunteers are serving in communities across the commonwealth impacted by a string of tornadoes that killed more than 20 people.

In addition to the childcare unit, Baptist volunteers are providing hot meals, clean-up assistance, hot showers and laundry service.

At each location, chaplains trained to counsel people in crisis are offering a listening ear and comfort.

With communications badly disrupted in West?Liberty because of the twister, KBC?s emergency communications unit helped keep individuals and?organizations connected in the days immediately after the tornado.

The services are made possible through gifts to Kentucky Baptist Disaster Relief and the Cooperative Program.

Hundreds of Kentucky Baptists who are not official disaster relief volunteers have been working in various ways through their individual congregations to meet needs.?

?We?ve been getting reports from all over the state through social media,? said Robert Reeves, director of communications for the Kentucky Baptist Convention. ?There?s so much going on that there?s no way we will ever be able to share all the stories.?

One of those stories comes from Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Independence, which launched a community Facebook group to coordinate disaster relief efforts. It has drawn nearly 2,400 members and is organizing work crews, fundraisers and other assistance.

?We always need more trained disaster relief volunteers and it is important to let people know that in a lot of cases unofficial volunteers are turned away from disaster areas by law enforcement or the Red Cross,? Reeves said. ?But there are 2,400 KBC-affiliated churches in the commonwealth and many of them have been and continue to be very busy meeting needs and sharing Christ following this disaster. We are very grateful for that.?

Webb and Reeves encourage Kentucky Baptists who feel called to disaster relief ministry to attend Saturday?s training at Porter Memorial Baptist Church in Lexington from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. EST.

?At the end of that one training session, you will be eligible to serve on a disaster call-out,? Webb said. New volunteers pay $40 per person. Returning volunteers who have not attended training since October 2008 are asked to pay $20. Another training opportunity April 14 at First Baptist Church in London will include Phase 1 training for new or renewing volunteers as well as a Phase 2 session during which volunteers are instructed on a specific ministry area such as childcare, communications, the mobile kitchen and chainsaw units. Online registration for each event is underway at www.kybaptist.org/drtraining.

New ORNL tool developed to assess global freshwater stress

New ORNL tool developed to assess global freshwater stress [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 23-Mar-2012

A new method to make better use of vast amounts of data related to global geography, population and climate may help determine the relative importance of population increases vs. climate change.

While several recent studies suggest that much of the world is likely to experience freshwater shortages as the population increases and temperatures rise, determining the relative impact of each has been difficult. An Oak Ridge National Laboratory paper published in Computers & Geosciences outlines a process that might help.

"Our work establishes a new method to couple geographic information system data with global climate outputs and statistical analysis," said ORNL's Esther Parish, lead author. Using this technique, researchers can now conduct assessments that will provide information critical to policymakers and stakeholders.

"Our tool provides a simple method to integrate disparate climate and population data sources and develop preliminary per capita water availability projections at a global scale," said Parish, a member of the Department of Energy laboratory's Environmental Sciences Division.

Parish and co-authors Evan Kodra, Karsten Steinhaeuser and Auroop Ganguly began working on this approach at ORNL in the summer of 2009. At that time, it was unusual to integrate population, climate and water data into one model. Although just a first step, the toolkit, which has been made freely available, may be further developed for more involved analysis.

While results of the study point to areas potentially vulnerable to water shortages, Parish cautioned that this set of calculations is based on just one set of ensembles from one climate model with static population growth rates applied on a per country basis.

By water stress, researchers are referring to per capita freshwater availability of less than 450,000 gallons per person per year, but the ways society chooses to store and allocate water will determine whether an actual shortage exits. For example, water can be allocated for industry, agriculture or residential use, or any combination of the three.

For this study, the team used ORNL's high-resolution Global LandScan population distribution dataset in combination with population growth projections from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. This allowed them to estimate changes in freshwater demand by 2025, 2050 and 2100. The researchers also used the Community Climate System Model 3 to estimate future freshwater availability during those same time periods. Researchers then combined freshwater supply and demand projections to yield estimates of per capita water availability around the world.

Given the number of variables, the process can quickly become unwieldy.

"Analyzing the interrelationship between human populations and water availability is greatly complicated by the uncertainties associated with climate change projections and population storylines," said Parish, who added that for this exploratory study population growth appears to have a greater impact than temperature.

To test the new tool, Parish and colleagues plugged in four IPCC greenhouse gas emissions scenarios from low to high along with global population projections to arrive at different potential scenarios. None paint a promising picture for freshwater availability.

The study suggests that by 2100, 56 to 75 percent of the world's population could be vulnerable to significant freshwater security threats. In areas like the Great Lakes region, freshwater may be easier to replenish than portions of Florida and the Southwest, but people in most areas of the country will face challenges.

"The worst case combination of per capita freshwater availability indicate that many major U.S. cities may experience some degree of water stress by the year 2100," Parish said.

In addition, the feedback between population shifts and water resources scarcity may exacerbate the situation. Thus, as pointed out in other recent studies, the projected water scarcity in parts of Central and South America may have ramifications for population movement and hence water scarcity in the United States.

"While we have not considered migration as part of this paper, these are precisely the directions we believe require further research," Ganguly said.

The researchers noted that while this paper outlines a proof of concept that lends some preliminary insight to the relative importance of climate change vs. population, output from multiple climate models must be incorporated in future research.

"By investigating multiple models, we may be able to quantify -- or at least qualify -- uncertainty in how different climate change scenarios could affect water availability," Parish said. "Given that population growth is likely to be an even bigger factor in water availability than climate change, it will also be critical to reassess areas of concern with regional- or state-level population growth scenarios."

Ganguly added: "Our understanding of multiple stressors on natural resources as well as dynamically coupled natural and human systems is critical to address emerging concerns like urban sustainability."

Pues rotundamente NO.

Parents of children with cancer distrust and fear online sources of health information, study shows

Parents of children with cancer distrust and fear online sources of health information, study shows

Thursday, March 22, 2012

Parents and adult caregivers of pediatric cancer patients prefer personal consultations with trusted health care providers over online sources for information about their child's illness, according to a University at Buffalo research study.

Despite the accessibility of online medical information, the UB study found that parents not only distrusted information found through the Internet, they often feared what types of information they might encounter.

"Respondents were telling us they were uncertain of the information online and that they were afraid of the unknown," says study co-author Elizabeth Gage, PhD, professor of community health and health behavior in the UB School of Public Health and Health Professions. "They didn't want to run into stories about 'the worst case scenario.'"

Gage, along with Christina Panagakis, a graduate student in sociology at UB, and colleagues at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, interviewed 41 parents of pediatric cancer patients in the U.S. to learn how caregivers use the Internet as an information source about their child's illness, its prognosis and potential treatment options.

The study, "The Devil You Know: Parental Online Information Seeking after a Pediatric Cancer Diagnosis," will appear in the May issue of Sociology of Health and Illness.

Beyond a distrust and fear of health-related Internet sites, the study's findings also suggest that online searching for information about an illness might vary between patients dealing with routine conditions and those faced with life-threatening problems.

"The likelihood of a patient going online might depend very much on context," Gage explains.

Previous studies looked at what Gage described as routine, contested or stigmatized illnesses, while her research contributes a piece of knowledge relative to severe pediatric illnesses.

"One of the reasons we were interested in exploring this issue is that so much research and media coverage had examined how the Internet was breaking down barriers between patients and caregivers and their physicians. But that wasn't that case in our study," Gage says. "Perhaps because of the severity of the diagnosis, parents and caregivers preferred to receive their information from sources other than the Internet."

The information-seeking behavior of parents and other caregivers appears to be influenced by the volume of available information, Gage says. Patients with routine illnesses might find minor details online that better inform their conversations with health care providers, but respondents in this study who were confronting a more serious diagnosis were overwhelmed by the often conflicting sources of online material.

"Families in our study did not know where to begin or how to sift through such a huge mound of information," Gage said.

Those who did look for information through the Internet tended to limit their searches to what they considered more credible sources, such as medical journals and hospital libraries, the study found.

"A lot of families used the Internet to establish connections with other families in a similar situation, as much for emotional support as for reasons to share medical information," Gage says. "However, many families ascribed a certain expert status upon these individuals, almost elevating the experience of what they call 'the veterans' to the same level as that of a trusted hospital-based site."

Intel Core i7-3820

When you?re building your own computer, the first thing to decide is: How much of an enthusiast do you want to be? If you have the desire and the money, you can go for an all-out bleeding-edge system; if not, there are usually more reasonable options. Well, the Intel Core i7-3820 CPU is certainly reasonable by the standards of the company?s Sandy Bridge?Extreme line: Priced at $294 list, it?s noticeably less expensive than either the top-tier Core i7-3960X Extreme Edition ($999 list) or the nipping-at-its-heels Core i7-3930K ($583 list). With the Core i7-3820 you?ll still get a fine chip for your money, but you?ll have to sacrifice the eye-popping performance and features of the pricier chips to get it. If you?re okay with that, you?ll be okay with this CPU.

The Core i7-3820?s differences are apparent just from its specs. In several ways it is much the same as its bigger brothers: It?s based on the same 32nm production process, it has the same 130-watt TDP, and it will require you to also have an X79 Express motherboard (with the LGA2011 socket), a discrete video card (there?s no integrated graphics system on the chip), and a separate CPU cooler (Intel doesn?t bundle one with any CPU in this line). But there the similarities end. The Core i7-3820 has only four processing cores rather than six and thus can handle only eight threads rather than 12. (Though, of course, you?ll most readily notice that deficit if you work regularly with highly threaded applications.) The Core i7-3820 has less cache, too (10MB, versus 12MB for the Core i7-3930K and 15MB for the Core i7-3960X), but it compensates with a clock speed of 3.6GHz that puts it at the front of the Sandy Bridge?Extreme line by that particular metric (the Core i7-3930K?s is 3.2GHz, the Core i7-3960X?s is 3.3GHz). The Core i7-3820?s clocks can rise up to 3.9GHz when Turbo Boost is active; that?s the same rate as the Core i7-3960X (and higher than the Core i7-3930K?s 3.8GHz).

Another variation from the other designs is what hurts the Core i7-3820?s street cred more. Whereas the other two chips have fully unlocked Turbo mode multipliers, this chip?s is only partially unlocked, which means it can be increased by a maximum of four speed bins over the stock clock rate?thus topping out at 4.3GHz. Because Sandy Bridge?Extreme chips provide additional flexibility in terms of adjusting the base clock (with 125MHz, 166MHz, and 250MHz straps), you can push the chip?s overall clock speed further than that. But still, if overclocking is your thing, expect that roadblock to be a bit frustrating.

All this is not to say, however, that you don?t get good performance with the Core i7-3820?you do. For example, when installed in a test system loaded with an Asus P9X79 Deluxe motherboard, it completed our Adobe Photoshop CS5 test in 2 minutes 55 seconds, just 2 seconds behind the Core i7-3930K and 7 seconds behind the Core i7-3960X. But you get (expectedly) bigger gaps elsewhere: In CineBench R11.5, the Core i7-3820 scored 7.07 with multiple cores activated, compared with 10.17 for the Core i7-3930K and 10.48 for the Core i7-3960X. On the Futuremark 3DMark 11 physics test, the Core i7-3820 dropped just below our threshold for smooth pliability, with a score of 8,679 and 27.6 frames per second (or fps) compared with 10,958 and 34.78fps for the Core i7-3930K and 11,509 and 36.54fps for the Core i7-3960X.

There are a couple of additional characteristics worth mentioning about the Core i7-3820?s performance. First, it easily beats out not only other high-end chips from AMD like the FX-8150 and the Phenom II X6 1100T, but in many cases the most powerful model from Intel?s previous generations, the Core i7-990X?a nice accomplishment that shows how quickly ?fast? filters downward. The Core i7-3820?s gains are considerably less significant against the regular Sandy Bridge?based Core i7-2600K, and its follow-up the Core i7-2700K, both of which are only slightly more expensive. But compared with the Core i7-3830K, you won?t see much of a difference in single-threaded applications: Both chips scored the same (1.53) in the CineBench R11.5 single-core test, showing where you can save money if you don?t heavily depend on highly threaded programs.

A nice dip also occurs in power usage: As measured with an Extech Datalogger, the Core i7-3820 pulled 121 watts while idle and 197.3 watts under full load, whereas the Core i7-3930K had a draw of 122.5 watts at idle and 233.7 watts at full load. This may not make a huge difference, but depending on your usage pattern could add up over the life of the chip.

We still think that if you?re going to go all out on a Sandy Bridge?Extreme CPU, the best choice is the Editors? Choice Intel Core i7-3930K: It may cost nearly $600, but it?s a terrific performer that only slightly lags behind the Core i7-3960X. But if you can?t afford that, and if you don?t already have a Core i7-2600K? or Core i7-2700K?based system that will for all intents and purposes be just as good, the Intel Core i7-3820 is still a compelling compromise. You?ll just need to be sure you can live without the bells and whistles the more expensive chips offer.
