C4 Waterman: A Rising Brand In The Land Of The Rising Sun ? C4 ...

C4 Waterman, Inc. Co-Founder Brain Keaulana throws a shaka at the Tokyo Interstyle Show in February 2012. Photo/C4 Waterman

Honolulu- February 28, 2012 ? C4 Waterman consolidated a growing presence in Japan this February with the launch of its new and expanded line of stand-up paddle-sports and rescue equipment at the Interstyle Show?in Tokyo, Japan.

Taking the helm of C4 Japan is Toshiya Omi, one of the most prominent figures in the Japanese surfing world.??Omi is?the President of his own Outdoor Accessories Company and the President ?of the Association of Surfing Professionals (A.S.P.) Japan, and has strong ties with Hawaii, especially in Makaha, where he is known as ?Omi-san? and has been a beloved member of the Keaulana extended family for decades.

?A lot of people remember that modern stand-up surfing came of age at Makaha,? said Omi, ?with the very first SUP contest 8 years ago at Uncle Buffalo?s Big?Board Classic, but they have no idea that only a few months later Brian introduced stand-up surfing here in Japan at Kugenuma with an SUP division in the Real B Voice Buffalo Surfing Classic Japan. Before that I think I was the first person to do SUP in Japan.?

Makaha stand-up surfing pioneer and co-founder of C4 Waterman Brian Keaulana has traveled to Japan more times than he has been to the mainland USA. He has a deep understanding of the Japanese culture and surf scene. ?Omi is like my Japanese brother,? said Keaulana. ?In Japan you have to walk the walk and talk the talk, and Omi knows this better than anyone. Like us Hawaiians, the Japanese have a deep reverence for tradition and their culture, so they really understand the core values that C4 stands for.?

Omi agrees and nominates his close ties with Brian and his family as vital to his enthusiasm about C4 Waterman?s growth in Japan. ?Brian and I have been friends for over 30 years and have shared many adventures together. The launch of C4 Japan gives me the opportunity to join the resources of my present distribution company, Kokunai Tsushima Co, with that of C4 Waterman. I plan to use my knowledge of Japanese business culture with my experience in surfing, rescue, and outdoor sports to build C4 into a strong brand nationwide.?

The alliance of Brian Keaulana?s authenticity and Hawaiian roots, and Toshiya Omi?s prestige and ability, made the C4 Waterman Japan booth a very busy place at the trade show. C4 co-founder and CEO Todd Bradley claims he hasn?t seen that kind of excitement in the market since C4?s launch as the world?s very first stand-alone SUP company at the Action Sports Retailer Show back in January 2007. ?We are blessed to be involved with a pro like Omi. It was so amazing to watch him take the C4 product line and just run with it,? said Bradley. ?In a really short time he has put together a solid business base for C4 in all aspects of what we represent not only as a business but as a culture. He?s ready to build up the C4 brand to its full potential here in Japan, not only in the surf segment but also in the outdoor recreation and professional rescue market, too.?

The close ties between Hawaii and Japan lead Omi to believe that the C4 Waterman ethos will thrive in his country. ?I was overwhelmed with the success of the C4 Japan launch at the Interstyle Show.? said Omi. ?To have both Brian Keaulana and Todd Bradley here really helped validate the strength that the C4 brand has created worldwide.?

'19 Kids'' Duggar calls 'racy' photos 'laughable'

By Randee Dawn

Prime candidate for dumb criminal of 2012: The woman who allegedly tried to blackmail Discovery Communications with so-called racy photos of Amy Duggar, the 25-year-old niece of Jim Bob Duggar, star of TLC's "19 Kids and Counting." Amy joined TODAY's Ann Curry on Tuesday to discuss the extortion attempt and share those photos with the world, proving in the process what a ridiculous criminal enterprise it was from the start.

Amy Duggar, a cousin of the Duggar family from TLC's "19 Kids and Counting," talks with Ann Curry about what she calls the "laughable" extortion plot against her and the network.

"I've never met her," the aspiring country singer told Curry of alleged extortionist Theresa Hunt, who has since been charged for the crime. "I don't know anything really about her at all.... Those (photos) are from my Facebook account. I posted those. My grandma is the one that actually took those photos."

TODAY was able to show the pictures without any form of censorship because ... well, there's absolutely nothing racy about them. Amy appears in two friendly pictures with family pal James Garrett, who she says has "known the Duggars for a really long time.... It's completely a laughable situation."

According to Duggar, she learned of Hunt's demands -- cancel "19 Kids" or fork over $10,000 -- from a show publicist. According to federal documents, if her demands weren't complied with, she'd release the pictures of Amy in "apparently intimate situations" with Garrett.

"We all were just shocked," said Duggar. "And kind of like, are you kidding me?"

Amy recognizes that these kinds of headaches are just part of being on a reality show. "You don't realize that every eye is watching you, everybody. So you've got to be a really good role model," she said.

And speaking of reality shows, Amy, who has musical aspirations,?revealed to TODAY.com that not only has she tried out for "American Idol" before, she's thinking about doing it again! "I wasn't ready for it! I don't think my voice was up to par," she said of her first attempt. Hear what else she had to say about that:

Dead letter offices: States closing the most mail centers

First-class stamped mail has declined more than 50 percent in the past 10 years, from 52 billion deliveries in 2002 to 26 billion in 2011.

By Michael B. Sauter, Ashley C. Allen, and Charles B. Stockdale, 24/7 Wall St.

The U.S. Postal service plans to close nearly half of the nation?s mail processing centers beginning May 15. The move, which follows a five-month study on 264 of the country?s 461 centers, puts more than 35,000 workers? jobs at stake. 24/7 Wall St. has identified the nine states where the USPS plans to close the most mail centers.

The plan is USPS?s latest attempt to stem mounting losses. At the current rate, the postal service?s debt is projected to reach $18 billion by 2015. The mail center consolidations are part of a plan to save $2 billion per year and $20 billion by 2015.

While it is still not clear exactly how these changes will affect delivery, a recent plan currently under consideration would make overnight delivery for first class mail impossible in many locations.

24/7 Wall St.: 8 reasons gas will hit $5 this year

The USPS is the first to point out that mail volume has declined precipitously because of electronic mail and the downturn in the economy. This places the postal service in an untenable position as it relies on revenue from mail service instead of tax dollars.

First-class stamped mail has declined more than 50 percent in the past 10 years, from 52 billion deliveries in 2002 to 26 billion in 2011. According to an email from USPS representative Sue Brennan, the drop in mail has resulted in significant excess capacity. She wrote, ?We have an infrastructure that has expanded over decades designed to handle hundreds of billions of pieces of mail and mail volume is no longer increasing. 2006 was our peak year. We need to right-size our infrastructure.?

According to the plan, neighboring facilities will absorb the functions of the 223 targeted centers. The USPS maintains that the 35,000 jobs will be lost through attrition, though employees will be relocated to other facilities initially. When not available, the employees will be offered other work, such as being post office clerks or mail carriers. In some cases, workers could be relocated to different states.

Nine states will see eight or more processing facilities closed. Almost half of the 223 plants scheduled to be shuttered are located in these nine states. For the most part, these states, which include California, New York and Texas, have the largest populations in the country.

24/7 Wall St.: 10 states that cannot pay their bills

If these measures are allowed to go through, some states will certainly be affected more than others. While unemployment in the U.S. has declined over the past year, it remains high in several states -- a number of which are set to lose the most processing facilities. Five of the nine states set to lose the most centers have unemployment rates above the national average of 8.3 percent. California and Illinois have some of the worst unemployment numbers in the country, and these cuts will only hurt their regional economies even further.

These are the nine states where the U.S. Postal Service wants to close the most mail centers.

1. California

  • Proposed closings:?14
  • Unemployment rate:?11.1 percent

Fourteen postal centers will be closed in California -- more than any other state in the nation. California is also the most populous state by a significant margin. Centers to be closed include Bakersfield, Industry, Long Beach, Pasadena, Stockton, Petaluma and North Bay. According to USPS spokesperson Augustine Ruiz, as reported by KPBS, overnight mail will be delayed by at least a day if the delivery address is further than 90 miles from one of the remaining processing centers. Ruiz also notes that employees will be given the option to follow their jobs to the centers where the work will be moved.

24/7 Wall St.: The most-profitable stores in America

2. Georgia

  • Proposed closings:?13
  • Unemployment rate:?9.7 percent

The USPS plans to close 13 processing centers in Georgia this year, including centers in Acworth, Albany, Athens, Augusta, Cartersville, Columbus, Douglasville, Marietta, Savannah, Swainsboro, Valdosta and Waycross. Some processing duties will be sent outside of the state. For example, some mail processing operations of the Augusta Processing and Distribution Facility will soon be handled by the Columbia, S.C., center, according to the?Augusta Chronicle.

3. New York

  • Proposed closings:?12
  • Unemployment rate:?8.0 percent

New York?s postal system will see a lot of change this year. The USPS will be shuttering customer service mail processing centers in Amsterdam, Binghamton, Glens Falls and Plattsburgh. A surface transfer center in Binghamton, processing and distribution centers in Brooklyn, Buffalo, Newburgh, Flushing and Garden City, an annex in Melville, a logistics and distribution center in Bethpage, and a delivery distribution center in Monsey will also be closed. New York is the country?s third-largest state by population.

The rest of the list of states closing the most mail centers at 24/7 Wall St.

Link Popularity and SEO for Better Visibility

Published by witter | February 27, 2012 | | 1

When submitting a website to the search engines, another action that is started simultaneously is improving link popularity. This is a very useful technique for improving the visibility of a website. A set of special software is used to search through the internet for similar keywords based websites. Once the websites are found, the webmasters are automatically contacted to exchange links. Link popularity is one of the most sure-shot methods of getting targeted traffic to the website.

The technique is really quite a simple one. You write an article using a primary keyword that is closely relevant to the web page you wish to target. This ensures that both the article and the web page are on the same focused theme. The article should be at least 400 words long, preferably 500 words. This simply means that the site that links back to your site must have been indexed by the search engine before those links will be of any value to your site.

A link simply is treated as a vote for your website and contributes to the importance of your site in the eyes of the search engines.

However, you need to be choosy before going into a link building exercise. Search engines value quality links from content-rich websites. Do not purchase cheap, inbound links from link firms; this may lead your site blacklisted by the search engines. The reason you need a full RSS feed is because other website owners love getting full articles for free without having to find them. The nice part about this is that if you get enough websites using your RSS for their site you will have lots of links very quickly.

The importance of your site being at the top on a search engine means more people are likely to click onto the site and SEO is one such campaign offering viable and long-lasting solutions. Given that your site ranks at the best position, people will be able to visit your site often since your site will promptly appear on the search engines. This is where this form of link building campaign helps. Link popularity is the term used to describe how popular, or how many votes your site has. It should be your main objective to gain link popularity if you plan on dominating your niche in the search engines. It is a necessary tool in Search Engine Optimization. When this tool is utilized to its full potential, positive results in the form of better revenues and improved Return on Investment are bound to be seen.

Opera Mini 6.5.2 (for Android)

If you're a smartphone user on a tight bandwidth budget, you'll really like Opera Mini 6.5.2, the lighter sibling of Opera Mobile 11.5.5. (free, 3.5 stars). Designed for just about any hardware running Android 1.6 and higher, and those with limited data plans, Opera Mini requires only one-tenth the bandwidth of a traditional browser. Granted, Mini requires that you to relinquish embedded video support?Flash and HTML5?but that's not a big sacrifice for the bandwidth you end up saving.

Unobstructed Views
Both Opera Mini and Mobile set the right stage. I pair the two because, unlike Dolphin Browser Mini 7.0 (free, 3 stars), which employs a different interface than its sibling, Opera Mini 6 looks nearly identical to its full-size counterpart?an incentive to stay seated with Opera. Both Opera browsers lack the swagger of Firefox 10's (free, 3.5 stars) swipeable trays, but the clean bottom-fitted navigation bar, defined by the Opera "O," looks and performs well. The tab-sorting tray, which reveals miniaturized page views, is a visual treat. Minimalists will appreciate how Opera provides a Full Screen Mode as well as the option to individually disable both the navigation and status bars. There's even a Mobile View that compresses full-size Web pages for the mobile screen (albeit, with mixed success).

As with its kin, Mini supports text wrapping, though the feature is made more potent with the latest release's dynamic pinch-zoom: text responds to the slightest pinch. Unlike Firefox or Dolphin, though, Opera carries an old-fashioned sensibility: separate search and URL fields. I consider this a frivolous use of already limited mobile screen estate; however, I'm certain that some users appreciate the distinction. At the least, it makes choosing search engine?for example, toggling between Google and Wikipedia.com?more accessible.

Dialing Extensions
Every time you open a tab you're greeted with a fully customizable collection of your favorite websites called a Speed Dial. The feature is clever enough that it's won imitation by Safari and Chrome ("Top Sites" and "New Tab Page," respectively) and duplication by Dolphin ("Speed Dial"). Your Speed Dial comes pre-populated with some Opera favorites (e.g. Facebook), though you'll have to manually configure your sites because Opera's Speed Dial doesn't automatically populate with frequently visited sites.

In the context of alternative browsers Firefox and Dolphin, Opera's greatest drawback is its subtraction of Add-ons. While the desktop client recently gained Extensions, Opera has yet to make them available for either of its mobile browsers. On the other hand, some international users who cannot access Google's Marketplace will appreciate that Opera is the only Android browser to bundle a mobile store through which to download apps.

Donning Cufflinks
Opera offers a host of browsers: whether you're surfing on a tablet, desktop, or one of 3,000 different headsets, Opera Link synchronizes your bookmarks, but it also transports those custom Speed Dials and search engines. I would love to see Opera take the feature a step further, and, in the model of Mozilla, add history and passwords to tote.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) ? An Alabama woman is under guard at a hospital after she gave birth following her arrest in the death of her 9-year-old stepdaughter, who authorities say was forced to run for three hours as punishment for lying about eating a candy bar.

Jessica Mae Hardin, 27, was transferred from the Etowah County Detention Center to a hospital on Wednesday, sheriff's office spokeswoman Natalie Barton said. Etowah County District Attorney Jimmie Harp confirmed that Hardin had given birth hours after she was arrested. He said he didn't know whether the newborn was a boy or a girl.

Hardin and her mother-in-law, 46-year-old Joyce Hardin Garrard, were arrested and charged with murder on Wednesday in the death of Savannah Hardin.

Roger Simpson, who lives up the hill from the doublewide trailer where Savannah lived with Jessica and her father Robert Hardin, said he saw the girl running in the yard. When emergency vehicles arrived at the home hours later, he said he thought they were there for the pregnant woman.

Alabama law requires people who are arrested to be informed of the charges against them in an initial appearance within 72 hours. Barton said Jessica Hardin's hearing will likely be held once she is released from the hospital.

The Alabama Department of Human Resources has been called in to create a safety plan for Jessica's newborn, as well as the couple's 3-year-old son, Harp said.

Department spokesman Barry Spear says the older child has been placed with a relative, and the plan is for the infant to be given to the same relative when it leaves the hospital. Speak said he could not reveal with whom the children were placed.

Savannah had a bladder condition common to young girls that meant she shouldn't have chocolate because of the caffeine content, Harp said. He said there is no evidence that the condition contributed to her death.

Authorities say Savannah was forced to run in the afternoon of Friday, Feb. 17. At around 6:45 p.m. Jessica called 911, telling dispatchers Savannah was having a seizure and was unresponsive.

The girl was taken to Children's Hospital in Birmingham where she was kept on life support while Robert Hardin, a contractor with the U.S. State Department, took eight flights to return to Alabama.

"It must have been horrible," Harp said, "especially for what he saw when he got back."

Robert Hardin made the decision to pull Savannah off life support, and she died on Monday.

Her death was ruled a homicide by a state pathologist and preliminary reports show she was extremely dehydrated and had a very low sodium level ? a chemical necessary to prevent seizures and dehydration.

Harp said he may pursue capital murder charges, which carry a possible death sentence. He said his office is interviewing neighbors who had seen Savannah running and expects to have a decision on the charges in a day or two.

The district attorney said he was not aware of any defense attorneys for the two women. He said in their initial appearance they will be advised of the charges against them and offered a public defender.

Bond for Garrard and Jessica Hardin is set at $500,000 each.

(AP) ? The founder of the file-sharing website Megaupload was released on bail Wednesday after a New Zealand judge decided Kim Dotcom lacked means to flee because his funds had been seized.

"I am relieved to go home to see my family, my three little kids and my pregnant wife," a smiling Dotcom told reporters outside court. "And I hope you understand that that is all I want to say right now."

U.S. authorities allege Dotcom facilitated millions of illegal downloads through his company, costing movie makers and songwriters some half a billion dollars in lost copyright revenue. He was arrested Jan. 20.

Dotcom was released without any monetary bail bond, which is standard in New Zealand's district courts. Ministry of Justice officials declined to describe the conditions of his release, saying The Associated Press would need to apply to the judge for that information.

The U.S. is seeking extradition of Dotcom, 38, and three of his colleagues on racketeering charges. He confirmed he would be fighting U.S. extradition efforts.

Asked how he had been treated by the police after his high-profile arrest, Dotcom said, "Well, it felt a little bit like an audition to 'American Idol.'"

New Zealand authorities have seized millions of dollars in investments and assets owned by Dotcom, including luxury cars and artworks.

North Shore District Court Judge Nevin Dawson found that the German-born Dotcom no longer posed a significant flight risk because the court was unaware of and hidden money or assets that could help him flee the country. New Zealand courts turned down earlier bail requests, but Dawson said details about Dotcom's assets had been unclear then.

"Mr. Dotcom's submission that he has not concealed any assets or bank accounts has largely been borne out," the judge found.

Dotcom was born Kim Schmitz but legally changed his name. He is a citizen of both Germany and Finland and was granted New Zealand residency in 2010. The Megaupload company is registered in Hong Kong.

Dotcom's colleagues were granted bail earlier.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it: Ancient computers still in use | Learn ...

Editor?s Note: The following article is reprinted from PCWorld.com.

It?s easy to wax nostalgic about old technology?to remember fondly our first Apple IIe or marvel at the old mainframes that ran on punched cards. But no one in their right mind would use those outdated, underpowered dinosaurs to run a contemporary business, let alone a modern weapons system, right?

Wrong!

While much of the tech world views a two-year-old smartphone as hopelessly obsolete, large swaths of our transportation and military infrastructure, some modern businesses, and even a few computer programmers rely daily on technology that hasn?t been updated for decades.

If you?ve recently bought a MetroCard for the New York City Subway or taken money from certain older ATMs, for instance, your transaction was made possible by IBM?s OS/2, an operating system that debuted 25 years ago and faded out soon after.

A recent federal review found that the U.S. Secret Service uses a mainframe computer system from the 1980s. That system apparently works only 60 percent of the time. Here?s hoping that uptime statistics are better for the ancient minicomputers used by the U.S. Department of Defense for the Minuteman Intercontinental Ballistic Missile system, Navy submarines, fighter jets, and other weapons programs. Those systems, according to the consultants who help keep them going, will likely be used until at least the middle of this century.

Here are a few stories of the computers that time forgot, and the people and institutions that stubbornly hold on to them.

Punch-Card Accounting

Sparkler Filters of Conroe, Texas, prides itself on being a leader in the world of chemical process filtration. If you buy an automatic nutsche filter from them, though, they?ll enter your transaction on a ?computer? that dates from 1948.

If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It: Ancient Computers In Use Today
Sparkler Filters? IBM 402, with self-employed field engineer Duwayne Leafley in the foreground. Sparkler?s IBM 402 is not a traditional computer, but an automated electromechanical tabulator that can be programmed (or more accurately, wired) to print out certain results based on values encoded into stacks of 80-column Hollerith-type punched cards.

Companies traditionally used the 402 for accounting, since the machine could take a long list of numbers, add them up, and print a detailed written report. In a sense, you could consider it a 3000-pound spreadsheet machine. That?s exactly how Sparkler Filters uses its IBM 402, which could very well be the last fully operational 402 on the planet. As it has for over half a century, the firm still runs all of its accounting work (payroll, sales, and inventory) through the IBM 402. The machine prints out reports on wide, tractor-fed paper.

If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It: Ancient Computers In Use Today
The punched cards used in the 402, with some mangled cards from a recently cleared jam in the card reader. The cards sit on the IBM 029 key-punch machine.

Of course, before the data goes into the 402, it must first be encoded into stacks of cards. A large IBM 029 key-punch machine?which resembles a monstrous typewriter built into a desk?handles that task.

Carl Kracklauer, whose father founded Sparkler Filters in 1927, usually types the data onto the punch cards. The company sticks with the 402 because it?s a known entity: Staffers know how to use it, and they have over 60 years of company accounting records formatted for the device.

The key punch isn?t the only massive accessory in Sparkler?s arsenal. The 402 also links to an IBM 514 Reproducing Punch, which has been broken for three years. When it works properly, the 514 spits out punched ?summary cards,? which typically contain the output of the 402?s operation (such as sum totals) for later reuse. Sparkler stores all of its punched data cards?thousands and thousands of them?in stacks of boxes.

If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It: Ancient Computers In Use Today
Sparkler Filters? collection of IBM 402 programs on IBM plugboards.

The company also possesses dozens of 402 programs in the form of IBM plugboards. Computer programming in the 1940s commonly involved arranging hundreds of individual wires in a way that would likely drive a modern software engineer insane. In the 402?s case, a spaghetti-like pattern of wires attached to hundreds of connectors on each plugboard determines the operation of the machine, and different plugboards can be pulled out and replaced as if they were interchangeable software disks. So you might insert one plugboard for handling, say, accounts receivable, and a different one for inventory management.

Sparkler?s 402 is a such a significant computing relic that the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif., sent a delegation to the company last year to try and convince its executives to move to a more modern accounting system and donate the 402 to the museum. That will someday be an appropriate resting place for the 402, but as long as it still does its duty, the Texas company has no problem keeping its digital dinosaur living a little while longer.

Computers That Can?t Fail

When you see reports about the small, remote-controlled drones that the military uses to gather intelligence and target enemies in Pakistan and Afghanistan, it?s easy to assume that all our weaponry is equally modern. Some significant weapons systems that our military depends on today, though, run on technology that dates back, in some instances, to the Vietnam War era.

The U.S. Navy?s ship-based radar systems and Britain?s Atomic Weapons Establishment, which maintains that country?s nuclear warheads, use PDP minicomputers manufactured in the 1970s by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC). Another user of the PDP is Airbus, the French jetliner manufacturer.

If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It: Ancient Computers In Use Today
A DEC PDP-11 system in a photo from 1972.

The PDP was among the second wave of mainframes called minicomputers because they were only the size of a couple of refrigerators instead of big enough to fill a room.

The F-15 and F-18 fighters, the Hawk missile systems, parts of the U.S. Navy submarine fleet, and Navy fighter test systems on aircraft carriers use DEC?s VAX minicomputers from the 1980s for various purposes, according to Lynda Jones of The Logical Company in Cottage Grove, Oregon, which helps keep these antiquated systems functioning.

If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It: Ancient Computers In Use Today
A DEC VAX 11/780 system in a 1978 photo.

Because of their critical nature, many of these systems will be in continuous service long into the future, perhaps to the middle of this century. For instance, the Minuteman ICBM program, which uses DEC VAX systems for testing, recently received funding that will keep it going until 2030.

?These legacy systems are integrated into multibillion dollar systems as control or test systems,? Jones says. Replacing these old systems with modern machines, she explains, would cost millions of dollars and could potentially disrupt national security.

As it turns out, replacing those systems with modern hardware designed to work like the antiquated components is a decidedly less risky venture. Jones? company is one of many that create systems to simulate older DEC minicomputers using newer, smaller, and less power-hungry electronic parts. The replacement computers emulate the exact functionality of the original hardware?and run the same vintage software?so it appears to the rest of the system as if nothing has changed.

If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It: Ancient Computers In Use Today
The Logical Company?s NuVAX 3200, a modern system that replicates a DEC VAX.

That?s important because most of Logical?s customers are defense corporations refreshing old weapons technology under contract with the U.S. Department of Defense. ?There are thousands of DEC systems in use for military applications around the world,? says Jones, ?including PDPs from the 1970s, VAXes from the 1980s, and Alphas from the 1990s.?

The United States developed many fighter jet and missile systems during the Cold War era using DEC hardware for test and control functions, says Jones, because the company?s minicomputers were among the very first general-purpose machines that did not require water cooling and could be used in harsh environments.

The biggest problem with maintaining such ancient computer systems is that the original technicians who knew how to configure and maintain them have long since retired or passed away, so no one is left with the knowledge required to fix them if they break.

Even if someone does know how to fix them, finding replacement parts can be tricky. Stanley Quayle, a computer emulation consultant, has seen contractors desperate to find the parts they need. ?I have a prospective customer supporting a U.S. missile defense system that is buying parts on eBay,? says Quayle. ?Any parts they do find are as old or older than their system,? meaning they?re sometimes no more reliable than the pieces they replace.

The Apple IIe Warehouse

Lots of people fell in love with the Apple IIe when it was released in 1983. It supported a wide variety of software and hardware, it was reliable, and its seven internal expansion slots made it extremely flexible.

If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It: Ancient Computers In Use Today
Kevin Huffman sitting next to his Apple IIe at Huffman Industrial Warehouse in North Carolina.

For Kevin Huffman, who owns and operates Huffman Industrial Warehouse in Eden, N.C., that love has never waned. His firm stores and ships out goods for companies that rent his warehouse space, and he regularly uses his vintage Apple IIe to track inventory and keep accounts.

Huffman got started with the Apple II line in college and later bought two identical Apple IIe systems from his brother-in-law in the mid-1980s, one of which he uses today. (He keeps the other unit as an emergency backup.)

Huffman?s Apple IIe setup is nothing fancy, but it is fully stocked. It?s equipped with 128 kilobytes of RAM, the standard 1MHz 6502 CPU, and AppleSoft BASIC in ROM. It contains five expansion cards: a printer card, two disk interface cards, a serial port card, and an 80-column video card. For peripherals, he uses an Apple DuoDisk unit, a 10-inch amber video monitor, and a trusty workhorse of a printer?a Star NP-10 that ?is still going strong at 26-plus years old,? he says.

If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It: Ancient Computers In Use Today
Kevin Huffman?s boxes of the six programs in the Manzanita ?The Business Accountant? software suite for the Apple IIe.

Huffman runs an application suite on the Apple IIe called ?The Business Accountant,? first published by Manzanita Software in 1984. Of the six applications in the suite, he uses five: General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Inventory, and Payroll. All of his data resides on the once-standard 5.25-inch floppy disks, but he?s not worried about data security: ?I back up the floppies with a program called Copy II+.?

Huffman uses a modern PC for word processing, email and Web browsing, but he?s reluctant to move away from his trusty Apple IIe for accounting work.

?I still use the machine because it is so simple to use, I know the software, and I can still update the tax tables manually.? He adds, ?The only glitch in the entire system is that it does not recognize the year 2000, so all my printed financial reports say 1912. But on the invoices, checks, and other forms, it prints in the 11/14/12 format.?

He?s even tried emulating the Apple IIe and his favorite software on a modern machine, but to him, the full experience matters. ?I thought about changing over to a more modern system, but there is nothing to be gained. As the old saying goes, ?If it ain?t broke, don?t fix it.??

The Color Computer Programming Assistant

John Kowalski?s Tandy Color Computer 3 running BBS software in a photo from 1996.

Few vintage computers inspire as much active devotion as the Tandy Color Computer 3, first introduced in 1986. The CoCo 3 (as it is affectionately called by its fans) never sold as many units as home computers from Atari or Commodore, but that engendered an even stronger loyalty in its users.

The CoCo 3 marked the end of a well-received line of Color Computer products from RadioShack, which launched the first model in 1980. The third model in the series turned out to be an impressive swan song, adding support for 512KB of memory and implementing advanced graphics and sound enhancements?all while retaining backward compatibility with pre-CoCo 3 software.

John Kowalski?s self-portrait from 1998?in front of a wall of Color Computer 3 units.

It?s understandable, then, that some folks refuse to let go of their CoCo 3 units for either work or play. One such loyal user, John Kowalski, a former console game developer, still considers his CoCo 3 an indispensable tool.

?I turn it on, type in a quick program to do something I need done, and let it run to get the results,? says Kowalski. ?I think of it as my personal assistant?sometimes I program it to do tedious or repetitive tasks like automated document reformatting, and I can continue working while it works beside me.?

Kowalski began his journey in CoCo-land with a Color Computer 2 in 1984. He traded up to the CoCo 3 in 1986 and stuck with the platform through the years, performing various hardware upgrades (upping the system RAM to 2MB and overclocking the 6809 CPU to a blistering 3.5MHz) along the way.

If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It: Ancient Computers In Use Today
The cover of the Namco Museum 50th Anniversary game for the PlayStation 2, a game that Kowalski?s CoCo 3 helped to create.

When Kowalski was programming console video games at Crystal Dynamics in the mid-to-late 1990s, his vintage CoCo 3 played a prominent role. ?Every game I worked on had at least some data in it created on the CoCo,? he says. Titles like Namco Museum 50th Anniversary and Tron 2.0: Killer App benefited from the vintage machine, which Kowalski used as if it were a powerful programmable scientific calculator.

For an original title like Tron 2.0 for the Xbox, Kowalski used the CoCo 3 to test 3D techniques used in the game. ?Many of the data sets used by the 3D engine were generated on the CoCo, like the tables for calculating depth and perspective in the 3D view, and the data for fish-eye reduction of the view,? he says. ?The texture map graphics used in the game were also translated into program data by a conversion tool I wrote on the CoCo.?

If speed wasn?t an issue, Kowalski would quickly type up a program in the CoCo?s built-in BASIC interpreter. In the cases that involved large amounts of graphics or sound data, he would turn to assembly language.

If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It: Ancient Computers In Use Today
The cover of Tron 2.0: Killer App for the Xbox.

The latter technique proved quite handy when working on Namco Museum or Atari Anniversary, which both contained reworkings of classic 1980s arcade games. Kowalski used the CoCo to extract, convert, and edit graphics data from the original arcade ROMs into formats a PlayStation 2 console could use. He also used the CoCo to translate vintage arcade source code and clean up sound samples used in the games.

With such an old machine, you might think it would be hard to export the working data to a more modern PC, but Kowalski has found no such problems. For years, he swapped standard 5.25-inch disks between his CoCo 3 and a Windows PC. Today, he simply connects a serial port between the CoCo and a PC, with the PC acting as a virtual disk drive emulator.

Kowalski says his current job designing electronics hardware doesn?t call for much data generation, so he doesn?t use the CoCo as frequently. But he hasn?t retired the classic machine; Kowalski keeps the 25-year-old PC on his main computer desk, ready to be called back into service at a moment?s notice.

Colon Cancer is the Third Most Commonly Diagnosed Cancer ...

Colon cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in the world and is most common in developed countries. Colon cancer prognosis is very much dependent on the stage that the cancer is in when detected and treated.

Colon cancer is the third most common form of cancer and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Cancer is often a very sad and painful subject to talk about especially if you or someone you know has been affected by it. Colon cancer is also known as colorectal cancer.

Colorectal cancers often start in the lining of the bowel and if left untreated can grow into the muscle. Most begin as a small growth on the bowel wall which is called a colorectal polyp. These mushroom-shaped growths are usually benign, but some can develop into serious cancer.

Symptoms include changes in bowel habits, lower gastrointestinal bleeding and blood in the stool.

The lifetime risk of developing colon cancer in the United States is about 7%. Factors that increase risk are age, family history of cancer, smoking and poor diet.

Colorectal cancer can take many years to develop and early detection of colorectal cancer greatly improves the chances of survival.

There are several different tests available for this screening which includes a digital rectal exam.

The doctor inserts a lubricated, gloved finger into the rectum to feel for abnormal areas. It only detects tumors large enough to be felt in the distal part of the rectum but is useful as an initial screening test.

Tests for blood in the stool are also useful.

A colonoscopy involves placing a lighted probe into the rectum and the entire colon to look for polyps and other abnormalities that may be caused by cancer. A colonoscopy has the advantage that if polyps are found during the procedure they can be removed immediately. Tissue can also be taken for biopsy to screen for cancer.

The best course of action is also prevention and regular screening. Lifestyle is important, eat healthy, get regular exercise and dont smoke. Make regular visits to your doctor and get tested.

The information provided is for discussion purposes only and not to be used for diagnosis or treatment. A medical professional should be consulted for diagnosis and treatment.

Colon cancer is cancer of the large intestine, the lower part of your digestive system. Rectal cancer is cancer of the last 6 inches of the colon. Together, theyre often referred to as colorectal cancers.

Making the Most of Networking Meetings ? @work: a career blog ...

I?ve already shared in a previous post that I read so many career books that when I find one that?s funny and profane in equal parts, I can?t help but share the advice with you.? Michael Laskoff is the author of a ?survival guide for the recently unemployed? called Landing on the Right Side of Your A**. ?(Title redacted; this is a family friendly blog, after all.)? His often hilarious advice is based on his own checkered career.? He?s a graduate of Harvard Business School and has held several high profile jobs for companies like McKinsey & Company.? He also wrote an employment column for Business Week Online.

His chapter on networking meetings contains some great advice.? In typical Laskoff fashion, he tells you what makes you look dumb and tells you what he?s thinking while you look dumb.? Here are his four tips for better networking meetings.

  1. ?Arrive with an agenda. Laskoff says that he?s sat through several uncomfortable meetings where the requestor had obviously used all his energy in getting the meeting and had not had any energy left to plan what to say once he got there. Laskoff says he tries to help out when the requestor is at a loss for words, but suspect other busy people will simply toss the jobseeker out on his ear.? For the record, my experience has been that most people are too polite to toss anyone out.? But I, too, have experienced an uncomfortable silence after opening the meeting with, ?How can I help you today??
  2. Do your basic research elsewhere.? This is excellent advice.? Laskoff says you should never waste time asking questions that you could answer yourself with a few minutes of internet research. You should never have to ask much about the person?s company or industry.? If you sound unprepared, you?ll hurt the rest of your presentation, no matter how good it is.? On the other hand if you ask smart questions based on your research, you?ll sound smart and worthy of more time.
  3. Don?t ask disrespectful questions.? Laskoff says he?s heard some stunners, including ?How much do you make?? I have never had anyone be quite that bold, so I?ve never had to drag out his uncouth response (?It?s none of your d*** business.?)
  4. Never ask for a job.? This is obvious to anyone who has read my blog over the years, but it?s possible that some people are still more hopeful than strategic. Laskoff says (and I agree) that you should never have to make a pitch for a job.? If you?re impressive enough, a smart person will be passing your information on to others in the industry whom he likes and respects.? If you are obnoxious in the meeting, he?ll be passing your information on to people he hates.?

Laskoff passes on other small etiquette gems as well. He suggests that you always reconfirm how much time your subject has for you that day. She may have initially promised you thirty minutes, but her schedule may have changed. Ask again how much time you will have together, and be prepared to edit your questions on the fly so you get the most important ones answered in the time you have.

He also recommends that you ask for more people you can speak to, based on the conversation you just had with your contact. Laskoff says that the most you can expect is one or two contacts, and you should consider that ?a d*** good haul.? If you get more, they are bound to be weaker, so take your two and move on briskly.

Finally, Laskoff says, your thank you should arrive a few days after the meeting.? He says that it should be timed to remind your contact who you are as much as it is to thank him or her.? ?Unless you?re stunning-looking or fascinating ? and you?re probably neither ? you can expect your contact to forget your existence in a few days or less,? he writes.? A well-timed thank you can bring you top of mind again.

His advice for following up is spot on, and as usual, he presents it in easy to understand and execute steps.? Laskoff is a funny guy, but he takes his career advice seriously. The combination makes for a great read.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Fans who were killed and injured when stage rigging and sound equipment collapsed onto them as they awaited a Sugarland concert at the Indiana State Fair failed to take steps to ensure their own safety and are at least in part to blame for their injuries, the country duo's attorneys said.

The statement, part of a Feb. 16 response to a civil suit filed by survivors and families of some of those killed, comes in sharp contrast to earlier statements by lead singer Jennifer Nettles and appears to be an attempt to cast blame elsewhere.

Calling the powerful winds that toppled the stage on Aug. 13 an "act of God," Sugarland's attorneys said fair officials and Mid-America Sound Corp. were responsible for the stage setup, and that the fans voluntarily assumed risk by attending the show.

"Some or all of the plaintiffs' claimed injuries resulted from their own fault," according to the band's response. Sugarland attorney James H. Milstone did not immediately respond to a phone call seeking comment Tuesday.

Seven people died and 58 were injured in the crush beneath the metal rigging and concert sound equipment.

Nettles told The Associated Press in a statement issued through her manager two days after the collapse that she was "moved by the grief of those families who lost loved ones. Moved by the pain of those who were injured and the fear of their families. Moved by the great heroism as I watched so many brave Indianapolis fans actually run toward the stage to try and help lift and rescue those injured. Moved by the quickness and organization of the emergency workers who set up the triage and tended to the injured."

Attorneys representing at least 20 law firms across Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky filed the complaint Nov. 22 in Marion Superior Court in Indianapolis alleging breach of reasonable care to the victims. The suit names as plaintiffs dozens of people injured and the families of some of those killed, and it seeks unspecified damages from Sugarland, producers, stage riggers and others associated with the show.

Jeff Stesiak, a South Bend attorney involved in the suit, said the band's response was strange given the circumstances of the fans' injuries.

"It's unusual to put the blame on victims. The concert wasn't canceled and they weren't told to leave. I can't imagine what the victims did to be at fault," Stesiak said Tuesday. "They had a duty to warn fans. An open and obvious danger is more like walking along a road and seeing a downed power line and walking over it anyway. The storm wasn't like that."

Lawyers for the band are seeking a jury trial.

In a Jan. 16 deposition on a lawsuit against the company that built the stage rigging, Indiana State Fair Commission Executive Director Cindy Hoye testified that Sugarland resisted delaying the start of the concert despite threatening weather.

Hoye said a representative for a concert promotion company working with the fair twice approached Sugarland about the fair's desire to delay the show. But Hoye said the band expressed concerns about how a delay would affect the time Nettles needed to warm up and complicate the band's travel to its next show.

Sugarland tour manager Hellen Rollens told investigators with the Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration that there was no discussion of delaying the show.

Earlier this month, Indiana regulators released a report saying Hoye and other fair officials were too slow to order an evacuation.

IOSHA fined the State Fair Commission $6,300 for failing to conduct proper safety evaluations of its concert venues. It also called the commission's emergency plan inadequate.

The agency also cited Mid-America, the company that erected the stage rigging, and the union whose members worked on the structure for various workplace violations.
