What are your MUST DOs on Bermuda?

Quote:

I am open to any advice/opinions about what are the best things to see and do on Bermuda. Thanks so much.

This is probably going to get moved to the Ports of Call Board (and there are people on that board who LIVE in Bermuda), but I'll answer anyway, since Bermuda is our FAVORITE place to go. We don't usually cruise there though because 3 days is NOT enough!

Do get the transportation pass. Take the #7 bus from the port into Hamilton. It goes along the South Rd and the views are outstanding. See something you like? Get off, then hop back on in the same spot. Take the Ferry back - more awesome views. Be sure to greet the bus driver when you get on and say thank you when you get off - it's the Bermudian way!

Take the Famous Homes and Hideways tour from Consort cruises. The couple that run it know a lot about the history of the island and the people who live in those fabulous homes. A lot of tour operators sell tickets for this tour. Buy your tickets directly from them - they are in the phone book. They will thank you for it, because although you pay the same amount - they have to give the tour operators a commission. They're just a nice couple and this is the way they make their living. I have no affiliation with them - I just liked them and loved the tour.

Take the ferry into Hamilton and head up the hill to the bus depot. Get the #10 or #11 bus to the Aquarium. The bus drivers are very helpful - if you tell them where you are going they will let you know when to get off.

At the Aquarium, they feed the seals at around 1-1:30 and the seals are adorable. There is an interesting museum, a lovely aquarium and a zoo. Check the high tide/low tide times in the Royal Gazette (the local paper - it makes a great souvenir) and if you're there at the right time (at the changeover from high to low tide) you can watch the water rush out of Harrington sound like someone pulled the plug.

Hop back on the bus (#10 or #11) and head for the Swizzle Inn. Ask for a seat on the terrace, have a Swizzle and a bite to eat, and watch Bermuda go by. I recommend the Montecristo sandwich - it's big enough to share, and the Portuguese Red Bean soup - it's spicy and so good!

Cross the road to catch the bus back to Hamilton. While your waiting, have an ice cream cone from the Bailey's Bay ice cream shop, and keep your eye out for chickens. They run wild in Bermuda!

All the buses run back to Hamilton at that point, but the #1 goes along the South Rd and it's a bit more scenic.

Visit the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI) - especially if you have children along. You can take the bus there from Hamilton or grab a cab from the Ferry Terminal. It's just outside the city, but it's a far walk. They have some really interesting exhibits, like Teddy Tucker's treasure (he's a local diver) and a shark cage set up where it looks like you are really in a shark cage with sharks attacking.

If you are in Hamilton on a Saturday at noon, you can catch the Gombey Dancers at Queen Elizabeth Park aka Par le Ville Park on Queen St. (not far from the Ferry terminal). You can also catch them at Harbor Nights (Wed Apr - Sept) or Destination Dockyard Nights (Mon Jun - Sept).

Out at the Dockyard, have lunch and try a local beer (I recommend Somer's Amber Ale) at the Frog & Onion pub. Ride the "train" it goes all over the Dockyard and it's free. Visit the Glassworks and you can also sample some rum cake there. The items they make at the Glassworks are beautiful and you can watch the artisans make them.

Have your picture taken in the Moongate (just ask anyone) it's good luck!

Do the Hartley's Underwater Walk - it's awesome and you won't get your hair wet!

And if you are there around the middle of June (it's never the same day, for some reason) check out the Queen's Birthday Parade - it was fun!

Well - that should be enough to last you a week or several trips anyway. Enjoy!

Excessive Alcohol Use When You?re Young Could Have Lasting Impacts on Your Brain

Jan. 30, 2013 ? There is growing evidence for the lasting impact of alcohol on the brain.? Excessive alcohol use accounts for 4% of the global burden of disease, and binge drinking particularly is becoming an increasing health issue. A new review article published in Cortex highlights the significant changes in brain function and structure that can be caused by alcohol misuse in young people.

Functional signs of brain damage from alcohol misuse in young people mainly include deficits in visual learning and memory as well as executive functions. These functions are controlled by the hippocampus and frontal structures of the brain, which are not fully mature until around 25 years of age. Structural signs of alcohol misuse in young people include shrinking of the brain and significant changes to white matter tracts.

Age of first use may be considered to trigger alcohol misuse. According to the researchers however, changing the legal drinking age is not the answer. In Australia the legal drinking age is 18, three years earlier than in the US. Despite the difference in legal drinking age, the age of first use (and associated problems) is the same between the two countries.

Instead, the authors stressed the need for early intervention, by identifying markers and thresholds of risky drinking behaviour at an early stage, while individuals are in vulnerable stages of brain development.

West Nile virus spreading due to mosquitoes in orchards and vineyards, experts warn

Jan. 30, 2013 ? Washington State University researchers have linked orchards and vineyards with a greater prevalence of West Nile virus in mosquitoes and the insects' ability to spread the virus to birds, horses and people.

The finding, reported in the latest issue of the journal PLOS ONE, is the most finely scaled look at the interplay between land use and the virus's activity in key hosts. By giving a more detailed description of how the disease moves across the landscape, the study opens the door to management efforts that might bring the disease under control, says David Crowder, a WSU entomologist and the paper's lead author.

Since it was first seen in New York in 1999, West Nile virus has reached across the country and shown few signs of abating. Last year, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control had the highest number of reported cases -- 5,387, including 243 deaths -- since 2003.

Roughly one in five infected people experience a fever, headache, body aches and, in some cases, a skin rash and swollen lymph glands. One in 150 people can get a high fever, headache, neck stiffness, disorientation and neurological problems.

Most efforts to figure out the ecological workings of the virus have focused on reports of infected people, "a crude indicator at best," says Crowder. Almost all victims have no symptoms or are misdiagnosed, while others can be infected far from where they file a report, he says.

Agricultural areas have seen higher percentages of infected people, but that still does not get at the underlying mechanism.

"Is that because there are more birds there?" says Crowder. "Is that because there are more mosquitoes there? That hasn't really been linked together."

Crowder, working with fellow entomologist Jeb Owen, other WSU colleagues and the state Department of Health, merged data from a variety of sources, including West Nile infections in humans, horses and birds, surveys of virus-bearing mosquitoes, breeding bird surveys, and detailed land use maps and climate data from around the Northwest.

The researchers found that habitats with high instances of the disease in horses and birds also have significantly more mosquitoes -- as well as American robins and house sparrows, the two bird species implicated the most in the disease's transmission.

"These same habitats are also resulting in much higher rates of infection within mosquitoes themselves," said Crowder.

"We find that all three of these things -- abundances of house sparrows and American robins, abundance of mosquitoes and the actual prevalence of West Nile in mosquitoes -- are increasing in landscapes with a higher proportion of land in orchard habitats." These habitats, says Crowder, include both orchards and vineyards.

It's still unclear why the habitats would create such a perfect storm for the virus. The researchers speculate that mosquitoes are drawn to orchards for plant nectar during flowering, while robins and house sparrows use them for nesting and feeding. Together, the insects and birds become focal points for the disease.

Free up Space on iPad or iPhone with PhoneClean

If you are one of those folks who have a 16 GB iPad or iPhone you will find space runs out pretty quickly.? PhoneClean is an application that can free up space on iPad and iPhone by cleaning out temp files, flushing application cache and more without having to delete and uninstall iOS applications.

I only have a 16GB iPad 2nd generation and I ran out of space quickly, it is time consuming and cumbersome to have to dig through all installed applications to see what takes up the most space and delete them manually on the iPad.? This is why when iMobie contacted me and asked me to review Phone Clean I jumped on board.

iMobie PhoneClean

PhoneClean from iMobie is an application you install to your Windows or Mac Desktop, you run it when it is connected to your iPad, iPod or iPhone and it will scan your applications and iOS device and give you options to clean out and free up space.? I specifically was looking to free up iPad space since my iOS phone has 64GB and didn?t have a low memory issue.

PhoneClean is freeware, so after you download PhoneClean and install PhoneClean and run the application you will see this screen while it waits for you to connect your iOS device.

phoneclean thumb Free up Space on iPad or iPhone with PhoneClean

After connecting your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to the computer, PhoneClean will show you how much current free space you have on your device and give you the option to start a scan.

After starting the scan which takes a little bit as it checks every single application, you will then be presented with cleanup options and how much space can be saved.

phoneclean savings thumb Free up Space on iPad or iPhone with PhoneClean

Then simply select what you are willing to clean up and wipe away the unneeded data.? It will start cleaning up data and you can watch as it sorts through each application.

phoneclean cacheclean thumb Free up Space on iPad or iPhone with PhoneClean

I will point out that news based applications have the most offline files and cache, AP Mobile had 1/2 a gig by itself, but before I ran PhoneClean the CNN application was consuming 1.2GB of cache files itself separately which wasn?t reflected here.

After the clean up is confirmed, you get the output message on how much space was reclaimed on your iPad or iPhone.

If you can?t part with any of the applications on your iOS device but you are desperate to free up space on your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch then PhoneClean is a recommended freeware tool to help free up memory on your iOS device.? I had no issues with it other than noticing the occasional typo like (file instead of files)?etc which is fairly common in freeware programs.

For those who had iOS space issues, how did you previously free up space?? Did you just delete applications or leverage another utility?

UK business travel defies fears of triple-dip recession - www ...

Latest figures show the corporate travel sector defying fears of a fresh downturn in the UK economy.

Guild of Travel Management Company (GTMC) transaction figures for the final quarter of 2012 show a 4% rise in total transactions year on year despite a provisional 0.3% decline in UK GDP during the quarter.

The fourth-quarter?figures left transactions for the year also up 4% despite an economy that appears to have stagnated for more than two and a half years.

GTMC members account for about 80% of UK corporate travel business, completing almost 17.5 million air, hotel, rail and other bookings last year.

Corporate air travel bookings in the final quarter were up 3% following a 4% decline year on year during the previous three months which included the London Olympics.

GTMC chief executive Paul Wait hailed the results as confirming "business travel is still buoyant and deals are being done".

He said: "The GTMC survey proves air travel transactions have remained at a constant level despite the economic performance.

"Business travel should be regarded as an investment and not a cost that is vital to successful company perfomance."

Speaking yesterday ahead of the GTMC annual lunch in London, Wait rebuked companies which have cut back on corporate travel.

He said: "People who have aggressively cut travel have contributed to the UK's poor [economic] performance."

How Tablets and Smartphones benefit Individuals with Special Needs

All too often we take everyday things for granted; ordering lunch from a menu, reading a book, typing an email. Yet there are many people that can't enjoy completing these everyday tasks. For example, part of what is so difficult in the life of someone with autism is that even though they can think and feel and experience most of the same things the rest of us do, they cannot communicate it orally. They cannot physically say that they are too hot, cold or hungry. They lack the ability to communicate the most basic of things you or I might remark about countless times a day.

Recently I watched a segment on 60 minutes where Leslie Stahl spent time with a few persons with autism as well as a therapist and some teachers. The results of what an iPad could do for a person with autism could bring a tear to your eye, especially when you don't realize how difficult it is for them to verbalize things that we take for granted.?

One of the apps suggested on the 60 minutes segment was called Prologuo2Go. The autistic male in the segment was able to express things verbally that he could never do before. It was awesome to see his face light up when he was able to order breakfast from the waitress.?

Proloquo2Go?

Proloquo2Go? is an award-winning Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) solution for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch for people who have difficulty speaking or cannot speak at all.

Proloquo2Go can be adapted to suit the needs of a wide range of users with varying literacy levels. Featuring natural-sounding voices, speech can be generated by tapping buttons with symbols or typing using the on-screen keyboard with word prediction. Proloquo2Go continues to revolutionize the world of mobile AAC, allowing individuals to communicate at home, in school, at work, in the community, anywhere, anytime.

iPhone Mobile Accessibility

You may be thinking, ?What about the iPhone??? Apple has a bunch of different features that are helpful to those who are visually/hearing impaired.

Aside from some of the obvious features like Siri, the virtual assistant, Apple has some not so obvious tricks up their sleeve.? Most of these features you?ll need to activate under the Settings>General>Accessibility section.?

One of the best features, at least I think so, is under the ringtone section.? If you have a hard time hearing a ringtone, you can set up custom vibrations so your favorite contacts can have their own pattern.? They have a few that you can play around with and you can even create some of your own.? There?s also an option to have your LED camera light to flash with an incoming call.?

Another feature, particularly for those who may be deaf in one ear, is Mono Audio.? This will take any music that is in a stereo format and pipe it through one ear bud.? Now you can have it all in one ear or you can have a stronger sound going into the left or the right.? Either way, it?ll let you get the full effect of the music.?

Visually speaking, there are some awesome features like Zoom.? This feature, no matter if you're in a third party or an Apple app, will let you zoom in on the page all the way up to 500%.? There is also a section to amplify your text which ranges from normal font to 56pt font.? Using Voice Over, everything on the screen will be spoken to you, from reading text to trying to find an app, when you click on a part of the screen, it will tell you exactly what it is.?

Technology has some wonderful benefits for everyone.

Facebook launches Ask Our Chief Privacy Officer, says knowing is half the battle

Facebook launches Ask Our Chief Privacy Officer, hopes to clear the air

There's no denying that Facebook's voting system for privacy policies is flawed -- when halting any measure requires enough votes to populate a large country, the attempt at democracy is more of a token gesture. As proposed, the company has launched an Ask Our Chief Privacy Officer page that's a tad more engaging. Fill out a short form and CPO Erin Egan just might offer a direct answer as to why Facebook chose a given privacy path, and possibly tackle any outstanding concerns head-on. Those curious users whose questions are picked will have to wait for a monthly public response to get their answers, so don't consider the page a personal hotline. It might, however, help make better sense of a company whose attitude towards our information is in constant flux.

2013 Farmers Insurance Open suspended with Tiger in control ...

Play has been suspended for the night at Torrey Pines with Tiger Woods holding a six-stroke lead. Here's a look at the action from Sunday.

As the sun set in La Jolla, Ca. on Sunday night, Tiger Woods headed to the clubhouse sitting at 17-under at the 2013 Farmers Insurance Open, leading the field after play was suspended for the night. Through seven holes in the final round, Woods sits six strokes ahead of Brandt Snedeker and Nick Watney in his quest for his 75th PGA Tour title.

Rain and fog have slowed down the tournament so far, leaving everyone to prepare for a delayed finish. Woods sits at three-under par for the final round. After posting three-consecutive rounds under 70, he's looking like he will run away with this one. Snedeker shot four-under par through 13 holes, but it appears to be too little, too late for any shot at catching Tiger.

Tee shots weren't exactly pretty for Woods down the stretch on Sunday, but his short game and a few impressive chip shots have him sitting firmly in control.

Play is set to resume at 4:00 p.m. on Monday afternoon, with Golf Channel and CBS providing the coverage.

Here's a look at the current leaderboard.

4) Brad Fritsch, -9

Spiritual Adventuress: Step Into the Flow

?Step Into the Flow.? Choose. Yes. It?s that simple. The Spiritual Adventuress is talking to herself here, and, if you wish, to you too! The flow of divine energy is always present, always flowing. We can step into it, or step out of it, by choice. It?s one thing to understand this principle intellectually, and another to embody and live it experientially. It?s still another to spend all, or almost all, our time in the flow. Spiritual practice.

Recently, the Spiritual Adventuress has been out of the flow (in a ?funk?), by choice, of course, choosing not to RPM (rise-pee-meditate) every morning (Oh, I?ll just stay in bed a little longer. I?ll get up when I finish reading this chapter. . . this article. . .). The dot, dot, dot are always there, trailing off into nothing. Nothing. The blog isn?t going to write itself (It?s not??? in a whiny voice). Devas will not finish the book manuscript and leave it neatly stacked on my oak, roll-top writing desk (?They won?t??? whine). The Universe, taking the form of an aquacise companion, lovingly invited me back into the flow. A published writer of young adult and juvenile fiction books, she, too, was ?feeling like a zombie? and ?saw the look in my eyes,? she later said. She offered to lend me her favorite anti-funk book on resistance and procrastination, one of five copies she keeps around her house for herself: The War of Art ? Break Through the Blocks and Win your Inner Creative Battles by Steven Pressfield. It goes without saying, well, almost, that the book not only applies to writing but also to the creation of our lives. This week I returned to my RPM and morning-page writing practices. And guess what? As soon as I stepped back into the flow, it was there. It had been there all the time. I just needed to plug my lamp into the electrical grid. Synchronicities showed up. Joyful experiences showed up. Because I decided to show up. W.H. Murray put it this way: ?A whole stream of events issues from the decision (to be committed), raising in one's favor all manner of unforeseen incidents, meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamt would have come his way.? A week ago I clipped an intriguing 3-line event ad out of Albuquerque?s Alibi, the independent arts and entertainment weekly: ?Duke City Dime Stories, open mic prose reading for 3-min. fiction or non-fiction.? It sounded like fun. Just days later, at the launch and author signing of the second annual edition of the literary journal bosque (the magazine) at a local bookstore, a member of my writing group and I were catching up with each other. She said she was writing about grief with two people she met at ?Dime Stories.? I told her about clipping their ad. She then turned around and introduced me to one of the co-hosts of ?Dime Stories? who had been standing five feet away from me during the entire presentation. Her business card is now in my wallet. The flow is that close. All the time. When we are available to it. The Universe, in the form of Alice Brasfield, decided to send along a little loving encouragement too. The Albuquerque Journal headlined a same-day article about her this way: ?Woman, 81, Is Now a Published Author.? Alice prefaced her bookstore reading with a few wry comments about the newspaper story: ?While I?ve never hidden my age, I didn?t expect to see it in a headline.? A grammatical error in the story referred to her as a ?former mother.? Everyone laughed as the editors of the literary journal made it perfectly clear they were responsible for neither mishap. Three separate people introduced me to Alice during mingle time. The third time, Alice asked the person how she knew me (aquacise). Curious, alert, alive, humorous ? I told Alice her obvious intelligence and her sense of humor made her an inspiration and role model for us all. Then she told us her son recently informed her, ?Eighty is the new sixty.? One of his class instructors is eighty. By attending the bookstore reading to support others, I supported myself (there?s only one). Not only was I inspired by Alice, not only did I meet the founder of ?Dime Stories? personally, not only did I warmly reconnect with friends, I also learned of writing opportunities, submission guidelines and deadlines. I could step back into the flow without having a difficult struggle, without having to swim upstream, without having to be miserable, without having it take a long time. I only needed to know the flow is always there and to choose to experience it. It?s great having life work seamlessly. It?s great being supported by the Universe. All I need to do is choose, then act. ?. . . destiny. . . is the child of action.? Deep Truth: Igniting the Memory of Our Origin, History, Destiny and Fate, by Gregg Braden

Bahrain police, mourners clash after boy's funeral

MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) ? Riot police and mourners have clashed in Bahrain following the funeral of an 8-year-old boy whom opposition groups claim died from respiratory problems triggered by heavy tear gas.

Officials did not immediately comment on the cause of the boy's death after he was hospitalized Jan. 19.

Rights groups and others have complained about intense tear gas use by Bahraini forces during nearly two years of unrest.

Hundreds of mourners staged a protest march following Sunday's burial, but were dispersed by riot police firing tear gas and stun grenades. Some protesters hurled firebombs.

Bahrain has been wracked by conflict between the Sunni-led monarchy and majority Shiites seeking a greater political voice.

More than 55 people have died in the unrest in the strategic kingdom, home to the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet.

Navigate Financial Difficulties With These Personal Bankruptcy Tips ...

If you were unfortunate enough to have your property repossessed by the tax man, you should probably consider bankruptcy. Bankruptcy is a major life decision, but sometimes it can be the right choice. Continue reading this article to understand what you need to know about bankruptcy and the likely end result of going through one.

Make sure you have gone over all your options before the dreaded credit harming step of filing for bankruptcy. Most companies will settle your debt for much less, or work with you to find a payment plan you can afford. You can realize significant savings in this way, and also spare your credit record. Think about debt consolidation loans before filing.

If you plan to pay debts off before you file for bankruptcy, be careful. Check the bankruptcy laws in your state to make sure you have not done anything in the past year to make yourself ineligible to petition for bankruptcy. Study applicable regulations prior to making any financial choices.

Even if you start a new job prior to declaring bankruptcy, do not change your plans! Filing for bankruptcy may still be the best way forward for you. When you decide to file could really make a huge difference. Should you file prior to earning your first paycheck, that money will not be considered when it comes to how you will repay.

Credit Card

If you owe money on taxes, don?t look at bankruptcy as a way to avoid paying. It?s not uncommon for some people to assume they can pay the tax amount owed with credit cards, and then use bankruptcy to hide behind. This is done with the hope of evading taxes by shifting the balance to a credit card account. But, this practice is prohibited by the bankruptcy code, and you will be responsible for the tax bill as well as the credit card debt.

See if your attorney can help you lower your payments if you want to keep your vehicle. Many times, payments can be lowered through Chapter 7 bankruptcy. There are certain requirements and restrictions such as a loan that has a high interest rate, cars purchased 910 days before you file, and a steady job history that can help you keep your vehicle.

Some attorneys may offer to contact creditors in regard to any delinquent accounts in your name. When a debt collector calls the number, they will be able to obtain verification that your personal debt is in the process of bankruptcy filing. Then, you won?t have to worry about any further harassing phone calls.

Make sure you know as much as possible before you file. If you cannot afford a specialized lawyer, you should think about filing for bankruptcy yourself. You should know what types of debt can be included in the filing and any debts that are ineligible. Those that do it themselves commonly make errors, preventing them in securing a discharge. You need to make sure you?re doing everything right.

After you decide that bankruptcy is your best option, learn as much as you can about the laws that apply to your case. Remember that the future of your family could depend on this decision; get help from a specialized lawyer to go through this procedure as smoothly as possible.

Always be completely truthful when you disclose your personal information during a bankruptcy. Your petition could be immediately dismissed by the court if they discover you have been lying. Make sure all assets and income sources are accounted for when you file your petition. This shows the court that you are doing your best to resolve your situation, and helps them expedite your proceeding.

There are differences between Chapter 13 bankruptcy and Chapter 7; be sure to familiarize yourself with both. Be sure you go on the Internet and do your research to see what?s best for you. If you have trouble understanding the wealth of information, talk to your lawyer so he or she can help you make an informed choice.

An experienced bankruptcy attorney can guide you through the process successfully. There are many lawyers out there to choose from. Hiring the cheapest lawyer may seem like the most logical option, but this is only true if they are also experienced.

Chapter 13

Be sure you know how Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 differ. Should you choose Chapter 7, your total debt load will be erased. This includes creditors and your relationship with them will become no longer existent. A Chapter 13 filing involves a repayment plan, though. Typically, you will make a partial payment against your debts over the next 60 months before the balance of the debts is lifted. You must know about the different bankruptcy types, and how each can affect you.

In conclusion, the option of bankruptcy is always there. It is not something that should be done lightly, however, due to the negative effects it can have on one?s credit. Learn all that you can about bankruptcy before you file. That way, you will be prepared to make the best decision for a happy financial future.

This is the article for you if you?re trying to learn about Fox Business. This article is full of all the information you need to know. The most current information is also listed in there. If you have seen it before, we talk about it. Review the article a time or two for full understanding.

New Israeli political star sets lofty expectations

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Political newcomer Yair Lapid electrified Israel with his surprising success in this week's election and an Obama-like message of hope and change, and expectations are high.

The former TV talk show host will need to make strides on pressing economic ills and advance peace prospects with the Palestinians to avoid becoming another in a long line of centrists who have burst onto the political scene with great fanfare, only to flame out.

To avoid that fate, Lapid's Yesh Atid movement may have to temper the lofty expectations of the Israeli public, and will surely need to produce concrete results in Israel's Knesset, or parliament.

"Everyone at Yesh Atid is aware of the expectations and the responsibility which is upon us," said Dov Lipman, an American-born rabbi and incoming lawmaker from Lapid's party. "All of us, including our party leader, left other careers to enter the Knesset. We did so out of a sense of duty and a passion to change the country's course, and we plan to rise to the mandate we have been given to do so."

Pre-election polls predicted Lapid's party would win about a dozen of 120 parliament seats. Instead, the party, running in its first election, emerged as the country's second-biggest party with 19 seats. Israeli pollsters said a mass of undecided voters went with Lapid in the final days of the campaign, with roughly half of them coming from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's traditional base of support.

Netanyahu's Likud-Yisrael Beitenu party remains the largest parliamentary bloc with 31 seats, and he is expected to continue to serve as prime minister. But the faction's strength fell substantially, from 42 seats in the outgoing parliament, and Netanyahu has little choice but to form an alliance with Lapid to ensure a viable governing majority.

Though Lapid himself comes from Israel's high society ? he is a well-known media celebrity and the son of a former Cabinet minister ? he campaigned as an average citizen fighting for Israel's struggling middle class. He criticized the country's high cost of living, its expensive system of handouts and draft exemptions for ultra-Orthodox seminary students, and to a lesser extent, Netanyahu's failure to advance peace efforts with the Palestinians.

The election, seen as a slap against Netanyahu, has made Lapid the talk of the nation and given him a honeymoon with Israel's normally contentious media. His coiffed silvery hair and wide grin have been plastered on the front pages of newspapers all week. Even Israel's usually brutal political cartoonists are accentuating his telegenic looks.

Netanyahu has already reached out to Lapid, calling for formation of a broad coalition. The two men spent two and a half hours in a face-to-face meeting this week, the beginning of an intensive period of negotiations in which Netanyahu will haggle with Lapid and other party leaders over political appointments and key policy goals.

Given its strong bargaining position, Yesh Atid, or There is a Future, is convinced it can make headway on two of the most intractable issues to bedevil the country: forcing ultra-Orthodox men to join their secular counterparts in performing compulsory military or national service; and pushing forward a peace treaty that would result in a Palestinian state.

These were two issues Netanyahu and his ultra-Orthodox and hawkish partners have until now been unable, or unwilling, to resolve.

"Yair Lapid has been clear that we will go to the opposition if the government is not committed to both," said Lipman. "We are confident that both can be achieved."

Doing so will not be easy. To ensure a parliamentary majority, Lapid and Netanyahu would need at least one other partner. The most likely candidates appear to be either smaller, ultra-Orthodox parties, which are sure to fight any reform in the draft law, or the pro-settler Jewish Home, which will resist any attempt to reach peace with the Palestinians. Netanyahu's own bloc is dominated by hard-liners who oppose any concessions to the Palestinians. Lapid will have to use every ounce of his powers of persuasion to make progress on either front.

It's not the first time a party championing centrist views has marched onto the scene seeking to solve similar issues. All before him have failed, including Lapid's own father.

The late Joseph "Tommy" Lapid, also a journalist turned politician, led the liberal Shinui party from 1999-2006. In 2003 elections the party ran on a staunchly anti-religious platform, garnering 15 seats in parliament and making it Israel's third-biggest party. But it bolted the governing coalition when an ultra-Orthodox party joined, making it impossible to carry out its pledge to loosen the grip of religious interests on some state institutions. Shinui subsequently disappeared.

The Center Party, created in 1999, had seasoned politicians and a retired general at its helm, but it also eventually disappeared on the backdrop of the rise of an ultra-Orthodox party.

More recently, Kadima, formed by former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon with moderate breakaways from the rival Likud and Labor parties, has seen its fortunes sink. Pushing for an accommodation with the Palestinians, it went from being the largest party in parliament in 2006 with 29 seats, to the smallest party in the incoming parliament, with just two seats.

Dov Weisglass, who served as Sharon's chief of staff, said the demise of these centrist parties ? including Kadima ? does not signal a failure of centrists in Israeli politics, but a dynamic voter base.

"Centrist voters move from place to place, depending on circumstances," said Weisglass. "The center is made up of people who believe in judgment by trial."

He and other political analysts predicted that Lapid could have more success than his centrist predecessors, including his own father. Joseph Lapid was in his 70s when Shinui made its quick rise and fall. His 49-year-old son is younger and has more time to build up his party in elections to come.

"He has all the time in the world," said political commentator Hanan Kristal. And, "he has learned lessons from his dad."

The makeup of Lapid's party is also far different from those of his predecessors. Instead of recycling experienced politicians, Lapid cobbled together an eclectic list of inexperienced newcomers. The coterie of enthusiastic, diverse fresh faces ? Ethiopian Jewish immigrants, social workers, a former security chief, a progressive Orthodox rabbi, and even a judo champion ? could inject new ideas to the political scene.

Israeli commentators expect Lapid to drive a hard bargain with Netanyahu. "Netanyahu will barely be able to swallow, but people tend to show a surprising degree of flexibility when they have a knife to their necks," wrote leading columnist Nahum Barnea.

"He looks cavalier, and a little bit like a beach boy, but I think there's a lot of substance," said Yaron Ezrahi, a politics professor at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. "This is the real incarnation of centrist leadership. Many people see it as a victory of enlightened Israel over fanatic Israel."

If a Netanyahu-Lapid coalition fails to realize the key goals of Lapid's party, Ezrahi said, the government could crumble, and Lapid could make a serious run at becoming prime minister.

"It depends on his performance here, but he might carry the day," Ezrahi said. "If he will do the right things in this coalition, there is a future for Lapid."

The Continuing Rise of the PBX Reseller Market : Broad Connect Blog

Since 2010, when the VoIP market topped the $50 billion mark in revenues, the hosted PBX resale industry has continued to soar. Even during the harsh economic upheavals that all markets experienced over the last few years, the VoIP industry has helped many large, medium and small size businesses adapt to this new technology.

?

As a way to cut monthly business expenses, many companies have begun outsourcing their in-house communication systems, with nearly half choosing a managed service. Hosted PBX Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) operations offer a cost saving flexibility with rich add-on features designed specifically for each company?s needs.

?

Studies as far back as 2010 indicate that the number of companies turning to Voice over Internet Protocol solutions, including hosted PBX, for their communication services, continue to rise at a minimum rate of 44% each year. In 2010 alone, SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) trunking experienced a revenue growth of an astounding 143%. Even more astonishing, while residential customer growth showed significantly higher numbers, it was the business industry that had the highest growth of all.

?

The Necessities of a Hosted PBX Reseller

?

Typically, the largest communications expense for any company is the purchase of their telephony equipment, and the continuing expenses of maintaining it. By employing the services of a hosted PBX reseller, customers experience a reduced cost scenario that continues to lower phone expenses every month. For medium or small businesses on an extremely tight budget, using a hosted PBX reseller eliminates the need for paying for a pricey phone system.

?

Because hosted PBX communication firms maintain constant control over their own phone service, they allow their customers to have the convenience and functionality of quality service without the huge startup cost. Traditionally, a hosted PBX reseller offers companies a turnkey, low-cost solution. This works well for businesses wishing to expand their communication system without the need to own the phone hardware.

?

An Expanded Horizon

?

For companies wanting to use the services of a hosted PBX reseller, the future looks promising. With the continuing need of SIP trunking and the trends of small and medium businesses outsourcing their communications services, numbers indicate that Voice over Internet Protocol is poised to double in size by the year 2016.

?

With innovations in Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), including hosted PBX systems, and the savings it presents companies, the future for all of these hosted services is likely to continue upwards for many decades. At a time when the economy makes it challenging for businesses to increase their profits, hosted PBX is in great need.

Ayotte to reintroduce legislation shielding Internet businesses from ...

Home ? General ? Politics ? Ayotte to reintroduce legislation shielding Internet businesses from sales taxes

By Staff Reporter

January 24, 2013

New Hampshire Senator Kelly Ayotte is getting set to continue opposing attempts by the federal government requiring online retailers to collect sales taxes for ?other jurisdictions in which they do not have a physical presence.?

According to a press release from her office, Ayotte is crossing the aisle and working Democratic Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon to ?reintroduce a resolution expressing the sense of the Senate that no federal legislation should give states the authority to impose any new burdensome or unfair tax collecting requirements on Internet businesses and entrepreneurs.?

Currently, a Supreme Court ruling has maintained that a state can?t compel out-of-state, Internet-based vendors to collect the same sales taxes as in-state brick and mortar business owners. But efforts at both the state and federal level have persisted, and Ayotte is again addressing the issue after introducing a similar resolution last year.

Ayotte took a very New Hampshire-centric tone, citing concerns that sales tax collections from out-of-state online retailers would infringe upon the Granite State?s sales tax free status.

?Online businesses should be a source of jobs, not a source of new tax revenue. New Hampshire prides itself on having no sales tax, and our Internet retailers shouldn?t be forced to become tax collectors for other states,? she stated in the press release. ?We need to be vigilant to preserve our tax-free status, and I will continue to fight any federal effort that would require New Hampshire Internet businesses to collect sales taxes.?

Top white-collar crime prosecutor to lead SEC - FOX19.com ... - WXIX

By JULIE PACE
AP White House Correspondent

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama on Thursday nominated Mary Jo White, a former U.S. attorney who built a reputation prosecuting white-collar criminals, terrorists and mobsters, to lead the Securities and Exchange Commission. The agency has a lead role in implementing changes on Wall Street.

Obama also named Richard Cordray to stay on as head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The president used a recess appointment last year to bypass congressional opposition and install the former Ohio attorney general as head of the bureau. That appointment expires at the end of this year.

White spent nearly a decade as the U.S. attorney in Manhattan, handling an array of white-collar crimes and complex securities and financial fraud cases. She brought down mobster John Gotti and won convictions in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and the 1998 bombings of 2 U.S. embassies in Africa.

Obama said that experience makes White well-suited to implement legislation he championed to change the behavior on Wall Street.

"I'd say that's a pretty good run. You don't want to mess with Mary Jo," Obama said at the White House. "As one former SEC chairman said, Mary Jo does not intimidate easily, and that's important because she has a big job ahead of her."

If confirmed by the Senate, White would take over the SEC from Elisse Walter, who is serving out the rest of former SEC chairwoman Mary Schapiro's term. Schapiro resigned in December.

In 2000, White led the criminal prosecution of more than 100 people - including members of all five New York crime families - accused of strong-arming brokers and manipulating prices of penny stocks. At the time the action was called 1 of the biggest crackdowns on securities fraud in U.S. history.

White's office also won a record $606 million in restitution from the securities arm of the Republic New York Corp. bank in 2001. That year, the bank pleaded guilty to conspiring with an investment adviser to hide hundreds of millions of dollars in losses from Japanese investors.

Cordray has run the consumer bureau since last year. Senate Republicans had opposed Cordray, as well as the concept of the consumer bureau.

Before she was elected to the Senate last fall, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., conceived of the idea of a consumer protection bureau. Obama considered naming her as commissioner, but her nomination would likely have run into deep opposition on Capitol Hill.

White, 65, heads the litigation department at law firm Debevoise & Plimpton.

She was the first woman to hold the position of U.S. attorney in Manhattan, 1 of the most prestigious positions in federal law enforcement. During her tenure from 1993 to 2002, White won convictions of white-collar criminals, drug traffickers and international terrorists. The most notable conviction was Ramzi Yousef, mastermind of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

She led the prosecution of Gotti when she was acting U.S. attorney in Brooklyn in 1992. Gotti died in prison in 2002.

If confirmed by the Senate, White would be the first prosecutor to head the 79-year-old SEC. Most SEC chairmen have come from Wall Street or the ranks of private securities lawyers. The choice of White is likely intended to bolster the agency's enforcement profile in the aftermath of the financial crisis.

White's background differs sharply from that of Schapiro, who guided the agency in the four years after the crisis. Schapiro worked at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, the securities industry's self-policing organization. Some consumer advocates have said Schapiro's experience as CEO of FINRA made her more likely to seek compromise and less likely to aggressively pursue misconduct.

During Shapiro's tenure, the SEC reached major settlements with the biggest banks on Wall Street, including Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase and Citibank. But critics said the penalties were small compared with the banks' revenues. And they complained that no senior executives were held accountable.

White would be expected to give high priority to expanding the enforcement efforts.

At the same time, much of the pressing work facing the agency involves writing new rules. The SEC is seeking stricter rules for money-market mutual funds and must get into shape the so-called Volcker Rule, which would bar banks from making certain trades for their own profit.

As head of litigators at Debevoise & Plimpton, White has represented a number of financial institutions likely to have crossed swords with the SEC in enforcement cases. Her clients also included former Bank of America CEO Ken Lewis, whom she represented in a 2010 civil lawsuit by then-New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo accusing Lewis of misleading shareholders in the bank's merger with Merrill Lynch.

White also represented the largest U.S. hospital chain, HCA, in the insider-trading investigations by the SEC and the Justice Department of former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., whose family owned HCA. The investigations were closed in 2007 with no charges filed against Frist.

Diet, parental behavior and preschool can boost children's IQ

Jan. 25, 2013 ? Supplementing children's diets with fish oil, enrolling them in quality preschool, and engaging them in interactive reading all turn out to be effective ways to raise a young child's intelligence, according to a new report published in Perspectives on Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

Using a technique called meta-analysis, a team led by John Protzko, a doctoral student at the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, combined the findings from existing studies to evaluate the overall effectiveness of each type of intervention. In collaboration with NYU Steinhardt professors Joshua Aronson and Clancy Blair, leaders in the field of intelligence, Protzko analyzed the best available studies involving samples of children from birth and kindergarten from their newlyassembled "Database of Raising Intelligence."

"Our aim in creating this database is to learn what works and what doesn't work to raise people's intelligence," said Protzko. "For too long, findings have been disconnected and scattered throughout a wide variety of journals. The broad consensus about what works is founded on only two or three very high-profile studies."

All of the studies in this database rely on a normal population (participants without clinical diagnoses of intellectual disabilities), focus on interventions that are sustained over time, use widely accepted measures of intelligence, and, most importantly, are randomly controlled trials (participants selected at random to receive one of the interventions).

"The larger goal here is to understand the nature of intelligence, and if and how it can be nurtured at every stage of development," said Aronson, Protzko's advisor. "This is just a first step in a long process of understanding. It is by no means the last word. In fact, one of the main conclusions is how little high quality research exists in the field and how much more needs to be done."

Overall, the results of the meta-analyses indicated that certain dietary and environmental interventions can be effective in raising children's IQ.

Supplementing pregnant women and newborns with long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, foods rich in Omega-3, were found to boost children's IQ by more than 3.5 points. These essential fatty acids may help raise intelligence by providing the building blocks for nerve cell development that the body cannot produce on its own.

There is insufficient research, however, to determine whether other types of supplements -- including iron, B-complex vitamins, riboflavin, thiamine, niacin, and zinc -- have beneficial effects on intelligence.

Enrolling an economically disadvantaged child into an early education intervention was found to raise his or her IQ by more than four points; interventions that specifically included a center-based education component raised a child's IQ by more than seven points.

The researchers hypothesize that early education interventions may help to raise children's IQ by increasing their exposure to complex environments that are cognitively stimulating and demanding. It's not clear, however, whether these results apply more broadly to kids from different socioeconomic backgrounds.

Surprisingly, Protzko, Aronson, and Blair found no evidence to support the idea that early education interventions that take place earlier in childhood are more effective than those that begin later.

Interventions focused on interactive reading -- teaching parents how to engage their children while reading with them -- were found to raise children's IQ by over 6 points. These interventions do not seem to have an effect for children over 4 years old, suggesting that the interventions may accelerate language development, which, in turn, boosts IQ.

Sending a child to preschool was found to raise his or her IQ by more than four points, and preschools that include a language development component were found to boost IQ by more than seven points. The link between preschool and intelligence could be a function of increased exposure to language or the result of the overall cognitive complexity of the preschool environment.

"Our current findings strengthen earlier conclusions that complex environments build intelligence, but do cast doubt on others, including evidence that earlier interventions are always most effective," Protzko explained. "Overall, identifying the link between essential fatty acids and intelligence gives rise to tantalizing new questions for future research and we look forward to exploring this finding."

How to Install a Dog Door | Home Improvement Ideas

24Jan

Lowe?s home improvement expert, Mike Kraft, demonstrates how to install a dog door. Before installing, make sure to measure your dog for proper fit. Measure from the widest points, most likely shoulder to shoulder, and add two inches. Then measure from the shoulder to the bottom of the chest or belly (whatever is larger) and add two inches. These dimensions will help you choose the right size dog door. Note: allow for additional room if your dog is still growing. After you have picked a door, measure from your dog?s shoulder to the floor. This measurement will let you know how high to mount the door. After measuring, mark the height on your exterior door. To make installation easier, remove the door from the hinges. You can set the door on two table saws, but make sure you mark which side is the bottom. After removing the door, cut out the dog door template and tape it to the door (where you marked the dog door opening height earlier). Then, use a jigsaw to cut out the dog door hole. Once the dog door cutout is finished, insert the inside frame so you can mark the four screw holes. Take away the frame and drill holes where you have marked. Place the exterior frame in the door and add sleeves. Underneath, insert the inside frame to the cutout. Thread screws through the inside frame, through the door and into the sleeves. Leaked press image of forthcoming Huawei Ascend P2 emerges ahead of MWC unveiling

Android Central

This press image obtained by @evleaks claims to be the next high end offering from Huawei. Following on from the Ascend D2 which first launched at CES, the Ascend P2 that we see here is also reportedly joining the 1080p display club. Only, unlike the D2 which comes in at 5 inches, the P2 display is reported to be just 4.5 inches with on-screen buttons.

Leaks of recent Huawei devices have proved pretty accurate, so while the usual rumor tag applies here too, there's plenty of cause to believe this is what we'll be seeing from Huawei in Barcelona next month at Mobile World Congress.

The P2, besides the display, is also reported to contain an in-house built 1.8GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, a 13MP camera and a pretty hefty 3000mAh battery. Software is said to be Jelly Bean, with no indication as to which version.  If it all pans out, it's clear to see that Huawei didn't just leave their big guns in Las Vegas. How much is true remains to be seen, but we'll be live from Barcelona next month to take a look at whatever it is that Huawei brings.
