Zynga folds on U.S. gambling bet, shares fall

By Gerry Shih

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Zynga Inc said on Thursday it will largely abandon its long-running efforts to build a real-money gaming business in the United States, a prospect observers had believed to be the struggling company's sole, tenuous lifeline.

"Zynga is making the focused choice not to pursue a license for real money gaming in the United States," the company said in a statement. "Zynga will continue to evaluate all of its priorities against the growing market opportunity in free, social gaming, including social casino offerings."

The announcement, which came on a day when Zynga reported quarterly results mostly in line with investor expectations, sent its shares down 13 percent to $3.05 in after hours trading.

Over the past year, Zynga's business model has rapidly crumbled while it continued to lose online gamers to rivals. Executives have pleaded for time to turn around the company, arguing to investors that greater fiscal discipline and execution would stabilize Zynga's position, while its foray into casino-style, real-money gaming could pay off handsomely in the long run.

That thinking has changed in recent months within the company's upper echelons, with founder Mark Pincus and his replacement as chief executive, Don Mattrick, opting for a return to Zynga's roots with free social games such as FarmVille, which catapulted the company to stardom in 2009.

"We need to get back to basics and take a longer term view on our products and business, develop more efficient processes and tighten up execution all across the company," Mattrick said in a statement.

Zynga reported $231 million in quarterly revenue on Thursday, a 31 percent drop from a year ago, as the struggling game publisher continued to lose gamers.

Zynga said the number of active monthly players dropped to 187 million this quarter from 306 million a year ago, its lowest since mid-2010. The company, which has acknowledged fundamental problems with its business model, went public in December 2011 at $10 a share.

Excluding certain items, Zynga posted a 1 cent per share loss, compared with a 1 cent profit a year ago.

Zynga reported $188 million in bookings, which is a measure of the value of virtual goods bought by players during the three-month period ending June 30. That is a 38 percent drop from $302 million a year earlier.

DFI launches 'Film Lab Series' to hone skillset of first and second ...

Doha Film Institute (DFI) today has launched the ?Film Lab Series?, a number of practical and hands-on sessions on all areas of filmmaking.? The series is designed to strengthen the skillset of first and second time filmmakers from the Gulf and locally who have mastered the creative steps of filmmaking, for those who have taken part in the Addesha Programme, and individuals who have the talent and drive to become professional filmmakers.

Comprising a series of programmes that touch upon each facet of filmmaking ? from script to screen ? the ?Film Lab Series? includes the: Documentary Lab; Hezayah Screenwriting Lab; Professional Hezayah Lab; Professional Directing Lab; Doha Film Lab; Animation Lab; Producer?s Lab; Transmedia Workshop & Lab; and Acting for the Camera Workshop.

Paul Miller, Head of Film Financing, Doha Film Institute, said: ?With DFI?s Qumra Film Festival billed to become the ultimate launchpad for up-and-coming filmmakers, the ?Film Lab Series? will take the efforts of the Festival further by creating a genuine cinematic culture in the region, by giving filmmakers the opportunity to bring out their own creative interpretations, inspired by their personal narratives.?

Mahdi Ali Ali, Gulf Film Development Manager, said: ?The ?Film Lab Series? will play a pivotal role in developing the proficiency of emerging filmmakers, allowing them to implement these skills through more tangible conduits like the Hazawi Short Film Programme and apply for DFI?s grants.?

Providing a transformative experience for Gulf filmmakers, the ?Film Series Lab? will explore approaches to access inner themes that are applied to personal narratives. During the ?Doha Film Lab? participants will create a short film while developing skills in scriptwriting, directing, pre-production planning, camerawork, lighting, on-set production, and editing.

The ?Documentary Lab,? will provide an intensive, hands-on introduction to the process of documentary filmmaking; while the ?Hezayah Screenwriting Lab,? led by script consultant Christian Routh (Elizabeth; Rob Roy), will focus on the rapid development of the skills needed to write a viable screenplay; and the ?Professional Hezayah Lab,? for established Qatari writers, playwrights, novelists, and poets who have had limited film training, will strengthen their skills to write for the screen.

International and Gulf producers come together for the ?Producers? Lab,? to hone their skills, develop the unique selling points of their projects, discuss business strategies and action plans to bring those projects to fruition. Storytelling techniques and logistical skills required to direct a film take centre stage at ?Professional Directing Workshop,? where first-time filmmakers or more experienced directors to gain new perspectives on their work.

The evolving filmmaking landscape and newer mediums that provide the opportunity for filmmakers to narrate their stories through technological platforms are the themes in the ?Transmedia Workshop & Lab;? while aspiring actors are guided through the specifics of acting for film with the ?Acting for the Camera Lab.?

DFI conducts year-round screenings, workshops, and masterclasses, under its mandate of active development of local and regional filmmaking talent. The Institute will also host workshops on technical skills such as Cinematography, Producing, Acting, and Editing.?DFI is committed to nurturing and developing a strong film industry in the region through various initiatives including film appreciation, education, finance and outreach.?

House GOP Focus is Repeal, not Replace Obamacare

Three years after campaigning on a vow to "repeal and replace" President Barack Obama's health care law, House Republicans have yet to advance an alternative for the system they have voted more than three dozen times to abolish in whole or in part.

Officially, the effort is "in progress" ? and has been since Jan. 19, 2011, according to GOP.gov, a leadership-run website.

But internal divisions, disagreement about political tactics and Obama's 2012 re-election add up to uncertainty over whether Republicans will vote on a plan of their own before the 2014 elections, or if not by then, perhaps before the president leaves office, more than six years after the original promise.

Sixteen months before those elections, some Republicans cite no need to offer an alternative. "I don't think it's a matter of what we put on the floor right now," said Rep. Greg Walden of Oregon, who heads the party's campaign committee. He added that what is important is "trying to delay Obamacare."

Rep. Fred Upton of Michigan, who leads a committee with jurisdiction over health care, said, "If we are successful in ultimately repealing this legislation, then yes, we will have a replacement bill ready to come back with."

Divisions were evident earlier this year, when legislation to make it easier for high-risk individuals to purchase coverage died without a vote. It was sidetracked after conservatives, many of them elected with tea party support, objected to any attempt to improve the current law rather than scuttle it.

With the rank and file growing more conservative, some Republicans acknowledge that without changes, they likely couldn't pass the alternative measure they backed when Democrats won approval for Obama's bill in 2010. Among other provisions, it encouraged employers to sign up their workers for health insurance automatically, so that employees would have to "opt out" of coverage if they didn't want it, and provided federal money for state-run high-risk pools for individuals and for reinsurance in the small group market.

The current state of intentions contrasts sharply with the Pledge to America, the manifesto that Republicans campaigned on in 2010 when they took power away from the Democrats. That included a plan to "repeal and replace" what it termed a government takeover of health care.

It promised "common-sense solutions focused on lowering costs and protecting American jobs," including steps to overhaul medical malpractice laws and permit the sale of insurance across state lines. Republicans said they would "empower small businesses with greater purchasing power and create new incentives to save for future health care needs." They promised to "protect the doctor-patient relationship, and ensure that those with pre-existing conditions gain access to the coverage they need."

But Rep. Paul Broun, R-Ga., said, "We never did see a repeal and replace bill last time," referring to the 2011-2012 two-year term that followed the Republican landslide. "I hope we can this time, and I'll keep fighting for it."

Broun, running for the Senate from Georgia in 2014 as a conservatives' conservative, has drafted legislation of his own that relies on a series of tax breaks and regulatory changes such as permitting insurance companies to sell coverage across state lines to expand access to health care.

Other Republicans are at work on different bills, in the House Energy and Commerce Committee headed by Upton, and elsewhere.

Rep. Steven Scalise of Louisiana, who leads the conservative Republican Study Conference, said the organization is working on legislation to reduce health care costs "without the mandates and the taxes" in the current law.

Like others involved with the issue, he provided no timetable and few specifics.

At the same time, the other half of the 2010 pledge to "repeal and replace" is getting a workout.

The House voted last week to delay two requirements, the 38th and 39th time they have gone on record in favor of repealing, reducing or otherwise neutering the system that bears Obama's name.

In the case of one of the rules, a requirement for businesses to provide insurance to their workers, the administration announced a one-year delay earlier this month.

Democrats and even some Republicans say the intense focus on repealing the health law is wide of the mark.

"Every voter knows what Republicans are against. They don't know what they're for" on health care, said Rep. Steve Israel of New York, who heads House Democrats' campaign committee. He said the strategy would haunt Republicans next year among moderate and independent voters who want changes, not outright repeal.

The fate of legislation to put more funds into high-risk pools demonstrated a belief among some Republicans that they should advance alternatives. Polling presentations make the same point but are not uniformly persuasive among the rank and file, according to officials, and lawmakers' speeches sometimes make it sound as if the health law is disintegrating on its own.

Yet one prominent conservative, Ramesh Ponnuru, warned recently that it was a "perverse complacency" to do nothing while assuming the health law will implode.

"We can be sure that the Left would respond to any such collapse by making the case for a 'single payer' program in which the federal government directly provides everyone insurance," he wrote on May 30 in National Review Online.

Ponnuru added that in some Republican circles, "the idea that an alternative is necessary is seen as a mark of wimpiness, a weakness for big-government programs that are just slightly" weaker than what Democrats possess.

Moosic Mets 17U Travel Baseball Team

Mike Zwanch is the manager of the Moosic Mets 17 and under travel baseball team. Zwanch works with his pitchers at the Covington Township community park baseball field. So far this year two underclassmen pitchers have Division I scholarships and a third is heading to Indian River Community College in Florida-the same school Cory Spangenberg from Abington Heights attended before being picked 10th overall by the Padres in the 2011 major league baseball draft.

?I have to give credit to some of the local academy?s. You have Baseball State Academy, Electric City Baseball, and the Sandlot where these pitchers are able to get work in year round and it?s showing. Obviously with the success of Papi and McCarthy (at Virginia) are area is a hot bed right now, and that?s the opportunity we try to provide for these kids,? said Mike Zwanch.

Billy Nelson from North Pocono heads to Indian River in the fall, after four seasons with the Moosic Mets.

?When I first came I just threw hard and had no idea where it was going . Throughout the years he?s been helping me with my mechanics and making me throw more strikes also gaining more velocity,? said Billy Nelson.

Dave Manasek from Abington Heights just finished a great junior season pitching for the comets. Fordham liked what they saw and offered him a full scholarship.

?It?s incredible. It?s like a big weight off your shoulders going into your senior year knowing where your going you can focus on class. I don?t have to focus on the recruiting,? said Dave Manasek.

Hard throwing lefty Joey Baran from Hazleton tops out at 90 mph on the gun. Boston College is high on this junior and so far Joey is full of joy.

?Zwanch is stressing first pitch strikes and getting ahead of batters then putting them away. Don?t mess around with pitches-don?t waste pitches. Throw first pitch strikes and you?ll get ahead of batters.?

This Moosic Mets team will be in Rome, New York next week playing in the Syracuse Sports Zone Invitational and for a lot of these kids they?ll have a chance to pitch in front of 30-40 coaches from Universities up and down the east coast.

?Their doing a great job of representing our area and when we go away like I said we we?re in Georgia we?re getting a lot of positive feedback and I think that?s what it?s all about.?

A family sits in an empty section of seats during the Miami Marlins and Philadelphia Phillies game at Marlins Park on April 13, 2013 in Miami, Florida. Major league U.S. sports are suffering a decline in ticket sales.

Major League Baseball's All-Star game on Tuesday night was set to draw a full house -- some 45,000 people filling all the seats of Citi Field, home of the New York Mets.

But the game appears to be an exception rather than the rule this year when it comes to putting fans in baseball stands. MLB's total game attendance is down by 417,192 people so far compared with last year at this time, according to Baseball Reference.com.

In fact, live attendance in other U.S. sports?pro basketball and football, motor sports and even college football?has declined or leveled off the last three to five years.

"The drop-off in attendance for live sporting events is getting worse," said Lee Igel, a professor of sports management at New York University.

"You've got a lot of competing factors in this, even bad weather," Igel explained. "But with the economy still sorting itself out, there's the huge cost of going to live events plus fighting through traffic and parking just to get to the games."

"And even more important is the experience of watching games in the comfort of your home on a big screen without the hassle at a stadium," Igel said. "That keeps a lot of people away."

(Read more: Murray Reaches Summit to Enter British Sporting Folklore)

The fall off in baseball attendence has gotten so bad, that the Miami Marlins?the team with the lowest attendance figure this year as well as the worst win-loss record?decided to close the upper bowl of their stadium for some home games.

Even baseball royalty, the New York Yankees, have seen a decline this year of nearly 2,500 fans per game and are selling half-off tickets through the online coupon service Groupon. Their bitter rivals, the Boston Red Sox saw their record 820-game sellout streak come to an end this summer.

This past season, several National Basketball Association teams, like the Sacramento Kings, the Detroit Pistons and the Milwaukee Bucks, had major attendance drops. The Pistons averaged only 13,272 tickets sold per home game while playing in the 21,000-seat Palace arena.

To lure fans for a game against the Dallas Mavericks in December, the Phoenix Suns offered a money-back guarantee on tickets, promising that fans could get a refund if they weren't satisfied with the team's performance, or even if the beer in the arena was flat.

The attendance drops have spread like a fan wave. A NASCAR auto race in March?the FC 500 in Bristol, Tennessee?had a reported attendance figure of 80,000 people, but that left a half-empty speedway that normally fills up with 160,000 for the race.

For 30 of 35 college football bowl games this past season, the average announced attendance was 46,278?down 5 percent from 2011-12 and 8 percent from 2010-11 through those same games.

Attendance at NFL games this past year was up slightly according to the NFL, but that was after some 4 years of decline. The league reached an all-time high in 2007?18,137.224 total attendance? but in 2011, dropped to its lowest level,17,391,163, since the league expanded to 32 teams in 2002.

(Read more: Pedaling for Cash: Tour de France No Easy Ride)

Only pro hockey, with its rabid fan base returning after a lockout and shortened season this past year, saw an attendance increase for a third consecutive season.

"All the major sports except hockey have major challenges getting people to attend live events these days," said Mark Conrad, a professor of sports law at Fordham Univeristy.

"Most sports can't just depend on die-hard fans to fill up seats," Conrad said. "They've had to offer a lot more than just the game."

To entice fans?while forgoing money-back guarantees?stadiums have built mini theme parks for families while expanding traditional ballpark food like hot dogs, hamburgers and garlic fries to sushi, fresh sliced tuna and gluten-free and vegetarian offerings like gourmet salads.

"There are more firework nights, rock concerts and even religious nights in some parts of the country to bring people in," said Conrad.

"It's more like a trip to Disneyland than a ball game," said Lee Igle. "The questions is, is this enough to bring fans in? Some that might just want to sit back and enjoy a game might think it's overload."

Kyle Massey NOT Dying of Cancer, Despite Widespread Rumor

Truth rating: 0

Kyle Massey

(Getty Images)

Kyle Massey is NOT dying of cancer, despite a FALSE rumor spreading on Twitter.

Over the weekend, the ?That?s So Raven? star become a worldwide trending topic after a fake report claiming the actor was terminally ill?circulated on the social media site.

It?s not known exactly how the rumor started ? but it is 100% NOT TRUE.

A rep for the actor tells Gossip Cop, ?Kyle Massey is not dying from cancer and does not have cancer.?

The ?Dancing with the Stars? alum?s spokesperson says Massey is totally ?fine,? but is ?upset that someone would make light of such a serious subject? because ?he has been affected personally from the disease as he has had family members who have passed away from cancer.?

It?s unfortunate that someone would fabricate such a story, especially in light this weekend?s actual sad news.

Better economy, more jobs means more riders on the bus

King County Metro is experiencing its second highest ridership year and is closing in on a new record as demand for transit continues to strengthen along with the local economy and job market.

Preliminary data shows that Metro has delivered nearly 400,000 transit rides each weekday so far in 2013, hitting the second highest average weekday ridership ever in May at 408,000 rides ? numbers not seen since 2008, before the recession and rising unemployment. Demand for bus service continues to grow despite a 5 percent drop in gas prices and elimination of the downtown Seattle Ride Free Area. These numbers suggest more people are relying on Metro as they re-enter the local job market.

While transit demand is up across the county, Eastside ridership appears particularly strong. Metro is seeing double-digit growth on Eastside routes such as the 221 between Redmond and Eastgate, 226 serving downtown Bellevue and Eastgate, 234 between Kenmore and Bellevue, and the 245 serving Bellevue, Kirkland and Factoria.

?This preliminary ridership data shows we?re poised to achieve a third straight year of ridership growth as our economy continues to strengthen,? said Metro General Manager Kevin Desmond. ?Instead of gearing up to meet this growing demand as it should be, Metro is preparing to dramatically cut service if a transportation funding package is not approved by the state Legislature.?

Other emerging trends point to growing demand.

Metro?s four RapidRide routes also continue to grow. The A, B, C and D lines have seen a combined 30 percent increase in ridership compared to the bus routes they replaced. These trends are moving Metro ever closer to the record 119 million trips it delivered in 2008, prior to the recession.

Park-and-ride usage is also up and has surpassed levels not seen since the recession, with demand strongest among suburban commuters, especially on the Eastside.

This snapshot of Metro ridership comes as it begins planning for a 17 percent reduction in bus service if the state Legislature fails to authorize funding to fill the agency?s projected $75 million annual budget gap. Sixty-five routes are at risk of being canceled, and service reduced on another 86 routes without a permanent and sustainable source of revenue.

METRO ticket books are

discontinued,

riders directed to ORCA cards

Metro will discontinue the sale of ticket books and gift certificates, and will no longer provide information at 624-PASS. However, all ticket books and gift certificates sold before July 1 will be valid until used.

The ORCA card and cash will eventually become Metro?s only payment options. ORCA cards can be purchased and re-loaded with additional value at ticket vending machines on the mezzanine or plaza level of each downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel station, at Sound Transit Link and Sounder Stations, and at the Bellevue transit center.

Many neighborhood retailers also now sell ORCA cards, in addition to revaluing any ORCA card including QFC and Safeway stores. Go to www.orcacard.com or call 1-888-988-6722.

Bicycles for Humanity to collect bikes at Summer Celebration

Again this year, ?Bicycles for Humanity Seattle? (B4HS) will be collecting good, used bikes at Summer Celebration!

Last year, Islanders donated 55 bikes during the two-day festival by dropping the bikes off at the Bicycles for Humanity booth.

Bicycles for Humanity, Seattle (B4HS) is dedicated to shipping thousands of bicycles to South Africa every year to help poor and impoverished villagers improve their lives with transportation. Since 2010, BFHS has collected and sent over 2,500 bicycles to Kwa Zulu Natal, SA from the Puget Sound region.

Why are bikes so important in South Africa? There is very little modern transportation as we know it. Bicycles can help health care workers reach distant villages that have no medical facilities. Because the high incidence of HIV has caused the orphan population to literally explode, donated bicycles can help South African children travel miles to school where a hot lunch ? possibly the only full meal of the day ? and an education await. And, in an area where one out of every two people is unemployed, bikes can also help villagers get to work or start a small business.

You can help by donating a bike, money or by volunteering. Mountain bikes are best, but B4HS will take any working bicycles, even ones needing minor repairs. For more information, go to www.b4hs.org.

ID emerges of third girl to die of SF plane crash

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? The name of a girl who died of injuries suffered in the crash-landing of an Asiana Airlines flight in San Francisco recently has emerged.

San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault on Saturday confirmed 15-year-old Liu Yipeng's (LEE'-ow EE'-peng) identity and said the girl was still in her seat when she was rescued last week.

Chinese state media has reported that she went to school with the other two victims killed in the crash. They were both 16.

Liu Yipeng's name was first reported in the U.S. by KGO-TV in San Francisco.

She died Friday morning at San Francisco General Hospital where she had been in critical condition since the July 6 accident.

On Chinese social media sites, friends and strangers have left condolences and lit virtual candles on what is believed to be her micro blog.

Penn State's board authorizes Sandusky settlements

UNIONTOWN, Pa. (AP) ? Penn State could soon be paying out millions of dollars to victims of former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky after disclosing Friday it had tentative agreements with some of the young men who say he sexually abused them.

The school does not plan to comment on specifics until the deals are made final, which could happen in the coming weeks. University president Rodney Erickson called getting approval for settlement offers "another important step toward the resolution of claims from Sandusky's victims."

"As we have previously said, the university intends to deal with these individuals in a fair and expeditious manner, with due regard to their privacy," Erickson said in a statement issued after the university's Board of Trustees approved a settlement resolution.

Sandusky, 69, was convicted a year ago of 45 counts of child sexual abuse, including violent attacks on boys inside school facilities. He is serving a 30- to 60-year prison term and maintains he was wrongfully convicted. He is pursuing appeals.

More than 30 claimants have come forward with sexual abuse allegations involving the longtime assistant to late coach Joe Paterno. The deals will be limited to a range of dollar values and subject to final approval by a committee empowered by the board to handle the claims. A university spokesman said the school plans to release the total amount it pays to settle lawsuit but will not provide amounts for individual cases.

Sandusky's arrest in November 2011 touched off a massive scandal that led to the dismissal of Paterno, then Division I football's winningest coach, along with criminal charges against other high-ranking school officials and ultimately NCAA sanctions that included stripping Paterno of 111 victories.

Board chairman Keith Masser said it was part of getting past the scandal and the collateral damage it has done to the university.

"We're just chipping away at getting these issues behind us," Masser said.

Legal experts say the "value" of a child sexual abuse claims depends on several factors, including the victim's age and the nature and frequency of the abuse. Many details about the Sandusky abuse claims have not been made public, but other molestation cases suggest Penn State may have to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars, up to several million, to reach settlements.

Ira Lubert, the trustee who chairs the Committee on Legal and Compliance, told the board that "tentative settlements have been reached on a number of existing claims" without detailing how many have settled, how many remain and how much money ? individually or in the aggregate ? might be involved.

Lubert said his committee was empowered to authorize the settlements itself, but thought it was important that the trustees approved the move in a public meeting. The trustees voted unanimously to make the settlement offers.

The committee was briefed in detail on the proposed settlements during a June 25 executive session and another such meeting Friday morning, before the trustees met publicly at Penn State-Fayette, a satellite campus near Uniontown, about 40 miles south of Pittsburgh.

Harrisburg attorney Chuck Schmidt said his client was one who expects to finish a deal based on terms provided by the university over the past week. He said only confidentiality provisions remain to be ironed out.

"We have an offer, and we have, basically, an agreement with the client to accept the offer," Schmidt said.

Schmidt's client, who filed a lawsuit that has been on hold, was not among those who testified at Sandusky's trial.

The firm of Feinberg Rozen LLP has been helping the university reach the settlements. It brokered mass litigation settlements stemming from incidents as varied as the September 11 terrorist attacks to the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and the Virginia Tech shooting massacre.

Friday marked one year since the release of a university-funded report about its handling of the Sandusky scandal that was highly critical of the actions by Paterno, former president Graham Spanier and former administrators Tim Curley and Gary Schultz.

Spanier, Curley and Schultz await a July 29 preliminary hearing on criminal charges over an alleged cover up of complaints about Sandusky. All three men deny the allegations.

Spanier remains a faculty member on leave, while athletic director Curley and vice president Schultz have retired. Paterno died last year of lung cancer.

Police Keep Historic Country Club Neighborhood Closed To Golf Fans

By:? Melina Matthes
MMatthes@kptm.com

OMAHA (kptm) -?It's been years of preparation, finally today golfers tested their luck in the 34th U.S. Senior Open by taking their first official swing in the beginning round.?

But, those attending the championship aren't having the same fortune.? They're finding out they can't park anywhere near the course.?

Those living in the surrounding neighborhoods say they're happy police are keeping visitors out.?

Hundreds of fans are attending the U.S. Senior Open at the Omaha Country Club.? The Omaha police department says its number one priority is to ensure fan safety and keep the neighborhoods quiet.?

One of the ways it's doing that is by shuttling in fans on buses.? Officials say they're extremely convenient and it's just a way to keep the neighborhood calm during all the chaos.

Jim Cunningham is a resident in the Country Club Historic District he says it has been more quiet than usual.? "There's a lot less traffic than normal in the neighborhood."

The Country Club neighborhood is quiet and calm near Cunningham's home.? Just a few houses down though, the street surrounding the community is busy with buses full of fans, golf carts and police officers.?

To help keep the area peaceful for those living near the course, cops are at each intersection preventing visitors from parking.? "Every time I try to come in my neighborhood there's people like being stopped cause they try to come in this way and they can't," resident Lauren May says.

Lieutenant Matt Lippold says, "they have tons of shuttles running and they're running all the time, there's no parking in the immediate area, it's almost impossible to walk up to the area."

People in the neighborhood say it's been very quiet.? There are no cars parked on the streets and that's because the police officers are checking every vehicle that comes in the area.? The homeowners in the neighborhood were each given four parking passes, allowing them the opportunity to come and go as they please.? "Police just wave you through and we go our way and it's fine," resident Theresa Pignotti says.

And so far, Pignotti says, it's working.? "If we didn't know it was down there, we wouldn't know a difference.? It's been quiet and great."

Pignotti also says it makes living near the U.S. Senior Open a blessing and not a curse.?

Officials say the shuttles are extremely convenient.? The Omaha police department encourages all the fans to use them.? The easiest way is to get on at the north Omaha airport at 72nd and highway 36.?

Again, parking in and around the Omaha Country Club is strictly prohibited.? Police say they will enforce that.? They say they'll give you a ticket or even tow your car.?

First Apple computer sells at auction for $387,750

An Apple 1 computer for sale at auction is seen in a file photo.
NEW YORK (AP) - An original Apple computer from 1976 has sold at auction for nearly $388,000.

Known as the Apple 1, it was one of the first Apple computers ever built.

It sold Monday for $387,750 at a Christie's online-only auction. Bolaffi, an Italian collections company, says in a statement that it bought the computer. The seller was a retired school psychologist from Sacramento, Calif.

Vintage Apple products have become a hot item since Steve Jobs' death in October 2011. Jobs joined forces with Steve Wozniak to build computer prototypes in a California garage, and Wozniak built the Apple 1.

Another Apple 1 was sold in May for a record $671,400 by a German auction house. It broke a record of $640,000 set in November.

Saudi Arabian Missiles Trained on Israel and Iran

King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia. Photo: wiki commons.

JNS.0rg ? Based on new satellite images, Saudi Arabia has apparently deployed ballistic missile batteries that have both Israel and Iran in their crosshairs, the British newspaper? The Telegraph reported Thursday.

The images, which were analyzed by military experts at IHS Jane?s, a business intelligence company specializing in military and national security, ?show a previously undetected surface-to-surface missile base in the Saudi desert, 200 kilometers (124 miles) southwest of the capital, Riyadh.?

Thursday?s report by the London-based firm could escalate concerns about a growing arms race in the Middle East linked to Iran?s military expansions and nuclear program.

According to?The Telegraph, Saudi Arabia currently has one launch pad pointing northwest, toward Tel Aviv, and another pointing northeast, toward Tehran.

The IHS Jane?s review noted that the weapons were most likely designed for Saudi Arabia?s DF3 missiles, truck-launched missiles with a range of 2,400-4,200 kilometers (1,500-2,500 miles).

Where To Borrow 15000 Dollars With Bad Credit | I Cash Loan

If someone is in need to borrow quick money, of 15000 dollars with fast approval, but is unable to provide collateral to loan lenders, the person who has bad credit may be worried whether their poor credit record may dampen any chances of getting a guaranteed unsecured personal loan. If you are constantly frustrated at the limited financing options available for people with bad credit, let us work out what are the quick ways you can borrow 15000 dollars with bad credit.

You may not be aware, but there are many online bad credit lenders who give signature loans for people who have poor credit scores and collateral is not a pre-requisite, although that option is also available if you wish to put down your house to get a large personal loan above 100 thousand dollars for 8 years minimum.

When you have a low FICO score under 550, it is true that most traditional banks and commercial lenders will not grant large loans to people with poor credit history. Thankfully, not every legitimate money lender adopts that lending policy.?

Some legit private lenders are able to provide large sum financing with no collateral needed and if you need to get a 15000 dollar loan fast with no direct deposit, this may be an option for availing cash with poor credit. However, since no collateral is involved with unsecured personal loans with no cosigner needed, many of these private cash advance lenders with no credit check often justify the higher risk presented in giving guaranteed high risk loans to bad credit borrowers by charging interest fee that can be many times more expensive than a regular bank loan of 10000 dollars.

You can freely request for unsecured personal loan quotes from many legitimate loan lending websites. For a long term loan of 15000 dollar with monthly installment repayments, even a little discount for personal loans online will cut down the total cost of your total payment considerably so make sure you shop around first for the cheapest loans for bad credit by online loan shops and also do your own sums on whether you have the means to repay a 15k personal loan with at least 2 years to pay back.

Metro golf tourney returns to Lookout Mountain

Lex Tarumianz may have started the conversation with Mike Jenkins.

Maybe not.

But for the first time in the history of the Chattanooga Men's Metro Championship, golfers in the senior division will play from a forward teeing ground.

"We all talked about it," Tarumianz said. "I think they needed to do it to get more players."

The 84th version of the Metro will begin Thursday at Lookout Mountain Golf and Country Club. Polly Boyd won the first incarnation of the tournament in 1929 and finished his career with six championships.

Other multiple past champions include the likes of Lew Oehmig, Willard Miller, Ira Templeton, Ed Brantly and Harold Lane.

Cody Godfrey can add his name to that list by repeating as champion. He won last year at WindStone -- the tournament rotates between Chattanooga District Golf Association courses -- by five shots over Gordon Hulgan and Richard Spangler.

"It's been an awesome year," said Godfrey, who is a rising junior at Tennessee Wesleyan. "It's going to be something new because I've never been the defending champion anywhere."

Playing at Lookout will also be relatively new to him and many of the younger participants in the regular division.

"The first time I played up there I was in high school and shot like an 85 the first time I saw the place," Godfrey said. "Everything up there is an optical illusion when you're reading greens."

Pat Corey, a member at Lookout, won the Metro when it was last held at Lookout in 2001. He opened with a 7-under 65 and held on. He will not be participating this week due to upcoming knee surgery.

"The conditions were basically as difficult as they could be," Corey remembered. "That first day I won the tournament and was able to hold on because that course played so hard you wouldn't believe it."

Lookout head golf professional Adam Campbell said the course will not be as difficult this time around.

"When you have a classic course, there isn't much you have to do because it takes care of itself," Campbell said. "Everybody is going to have their three-putts and they'll have to accept that."

And that includes the seniors who can move up a set of tees if they'd like, or compete in the regular division. In previous years, all competitors played from the same markers and seniors were eligible to win the overall championship as well as the senior division.

Jenkins will be in the senior division which he helped create for this tournament and other Chattanooga TPC events.

"I think it will be a process that grows and gets us a few extra seniors each year for the next few year," Jenkins said. "I think it will make it more fun for them."

2013 Arden-Arcade Spirit of Freedom Parade - Drummers With Education Shine!

2013 Arden-Arcade Spirit of Freedom Parade ? July 4th

The Sheriff?s Community Impact Program (SCIP) would like to recognize Drummers with Education (DWE) for their award winning performance this past week.?

July 4th was a very hot day and by 10 a.m. when the parade started, the temperature was already hovering 100+ degrees.? The humidity was rather high, too.? Nonetheless, DWE Director, Katoya Moore, had her drum line ready to rock, and that they did!

Most of the drum line scholars are from DWE?S Summer Empowerment Camp at Encina Prepatory High School.? Scholars range in age from 5 to 16 years old. ?

The scholars did a fantastic job as they marched the mile-long route on Fulton to Cottage and then on to Bell with the parade ending at Howe Park.

As members of the drum line marched the mile-long route, they provided the parade spectators with powerful and rhythmic sounds.? What is impressive about this particular group, most of whom participating in DWE?S Summer Empowerment Camp at Encina, is they had only five days to practice together and some had never played the drum nor read music!

Nice job, Katoya? And way to go, Drum Line Scholars!!!

SCIP and Youth Services Unit would like to thank the Fulton-El Camino Recreation and Park District for allowing participation in this great community event.? ?This year we were very excited to learn that Drummers With Education won Best of Show for their drum line performance.?

Congratulations to DWE for their award-winning performance!?

Bravo!

Consumer Regulatory Agency Takes On Debt Collectors

The consumer agency created by the Dodd-Frank financial reform law is asserting authority over debt collection actions by large banks. A post on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau?s (CFPB) blog Wednesday laid out the agency?s new effort to guard against abusive and deceptive practices involving consumer debt.

In addition to opening their consumer complaints hotline and web tools to debt collection abuse complaints, the CFPB posted five ?action letters? for common consumer responses to debt collectors. The documents include instructions on when and how individuals should use the paperwork, as well as advice on debtors? rights. The letter templates range from requests for further information about a debt claim to notifications that the debtor has hired legal counsel.

The number of Americans in need of such assistance has shot up in recent years. In 2012, consumers were twice as likely to be pursued by collectors as they had been at the turn of the century, with one in seven Americans facing third-party debt collection claims. Complaints about debt collector abuses tripled from 2002 to 2010. At the same time, the consequences for borrowers grew much more severe, with collector claims landing thousands in modern-day debtor?s prisons, often despite erroneous paperwork.

In May, regulators at the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) expanded an investigation of credit card debt collection abuses that had previously been focused on JPMorgan Chase. As far back as 2009, JPMorgan allegedly instructed employees in its credit card collections division to knowingly sign off on erroneous documents, echoing ?robosigning? abuses in the mortgage industry. The bank dropped tens of billions of dollars? worth of collection claims in the spring of 2011 after the allegations became public.

But because of the way consumer debt gets sold and resold to small firms specializing in collections, the bank?s decision to drop its own collections efforts did not mean the alleged paperwork abuses stopped plaguing consumers. The Washington Post reported in May that OCC had widened its investigation to include other large banks.

In addition to the OCC?s ongoing credit card investigation, the Federal Trade Commission has been pursuing cases against the smaller companies that buy debt from the original lenders and then work to collect it.

The CFPB?s new effort seeks to close what the New York Times terms ?the regulatory void? around debt collection and give consumers hounded by debt collectors some relief. Different forms of debt fall under different regulatory jurisdictions, so responsibility for policing collectors is messy to sort out. But the collection practices of lenders themselves have fallen into a crack in the laws that prohibit harassment and other abusive collector practices, according to CFPB head Richard Cordray.

PFT: Broncos' personnel director charged with DUI

Carlos OrtizAP

On Tuesday, limited snippets of an affidavit filed in a Florida court emerged, via the Associated Press.? And while the information published by the AP was accurate, it was hardly complete.

Albert Breer of NFL Network has passed along the entire affidavit, and it paints a much more comprehensive picture of what Carlos Ortiz said, and when and where he said it.

Basically, Ortiz said everything he knows.

As of Tuesday, June 25, Ortiz was on probation.? He showed up that day for a previously-scheduled meeting with his probation officer.? When Ortiz got there, he learned that there was another purpose for that day?s meeting.

Investigators provided Ortiz with the so-called Miranda warnings (?you have the right to remain silent . . .?), and Ortiz nevertheless agreed to speak.? Both the video and audio were recorded.

Ortiz said that he and Wallace arrived at Hernandez?s home in North Attleboro just after midnight on June 17, 2013.? Hernandez and Shayanna Jenkins weren?t home; a babysitter let Wallace and Ortiz into the home.

Ortiz saw ?a small and large handgun? in the home, and when Hernandez returned with Jenkins, Ortiz saw Hernandez ?carrying a handgun.?

The three men ? Hernandez, Ortiz, and Wallace ? left the home at 1:09 a.m., stopping once for gas and then picking up Odin Lloyd and traveling back to North Attleboro.

Ortiz told police that, on the drive back, ?he overheard Mr. Hernandez state directly to Mr. Lloyd that he was ?chilling? with people that [Hernandez] had problems with.?? Ortiz said that Hernandez and Lloyd ?made up by ?shaking hands? and added that ?it? was squashed.?

Ortiz then fell asleep.? He woke up when the vehicle stopped, and Ortiz saw the other three men ? Hernandez, Wallace, and Lloyd ? get out of the car ?to urinate.?

Ortiz then heard gunshots.

Hernandez and Wallace got back in to the car ?without Mr. Lloyd,? and the vehicle ?fled? the scene.

Because he had been asleep and stayed in the car, Ortiz didn?t know who had fired the shots, which makes Monday?s report that Wallace told Ortiz that Hernandez fired the shots now more sensible.

When the vehicle returned to Hernandez?s house, Wallace asked Ortiz to get a small gun located under the rear of the driver?s seat.? Ortiz got the gun, carried it inside, and gave it to Hernandez.

Ortiz said that he then went back to sleep.

The affidavit confirms that it was Ortiz who told police about the things Hernandez said to Lloyd in the car, but Ortiz?s version as explained in the affidavit differs from the representations made in court by prosecutor Bill McCauley during Hernandez?s arraignment.? For example, McCauley mentioned that Hernandez spoke about not being able to trust anyone, and that Hernandez wasn?t upset about Lloyd ?chilling? with people Hernandez had issues with but that Lloyd had actually said something to them that called his trustworthiness in to question.? Also, McCauley said nothing about Hernandez and Lloyd making up.

Still, if Ortiz repeats his story in court, it will be very hard to overcome the clear and complete picture it paints.? While Hernandez?s lawyers surely will try to paint Ortiz as a liar, the reality is that Hernandez specifically asked Ortiz and Wallace to come to Massachusetts from Connecticut.? As a practical matter, Hernandez is pretty much stuck with whatever Ortiz says happened, unless Hernandez and Wallace plan to offer an alternative explanation on the witness stand at trial.

As you advance through the game, the grids will get larger, time will get shorter, and different obstacles will be thrown in the mix. You can also challenge your friends via Game Center to compete for different achievements and the fastest times.

Mind Blitz starts off as a simple matching game where you'll be tapping on tiles in order to flip them over and match them with the same tile that's hidden elsewhere on the board. The further you get into the game, the more tiles will be added making it harder to complete each level.

As you progress through levels, you'll gain the ability to use the power that you've earned through game play in order to purchase power ups. The power ups include adding 15 seconds, free card flips, power multipliers, and wiggles. While the first three are apparent, the last probably isn't. Using the wiggle power up will allow you to flip over any card and its match will wiggle. Each time you use it, you'll get two cards to wiggle resulting in two free matches.

When it comes to collecting power ups, you'll notice the circle at the top of the screen fill with green as you make matches. The number will go up with each power up you collect. These are what you'll use towards buying power ups. Considering you must start a level over if you fail a round, it's pretty easy to collect power ups quickly.

The good

  • Great interface with cards that are easy to differentiate from each other
  • Power ups are quick and easy to collect, meaning not spending tons on in-app purchases like some games base themselves on
  • Game Center integration makes working towards achievements and competing against friends easy

The bad

  • The animations between flipping cards are a little long, and it eats precious seconds
  • Having to start completely over each time you fail one level is somewhat of a letdown, I wish you were able to pick up with the level you failed

The bottom line

When it comes to memory matching games, I have yet to find one as well put together as Mind Blitz. Not only does it bring back a classic, it adds fun little twists such as shuffle cards.

If you're looking for a laid back puzzler that you'll never get tired of picking up here and there, Mind Blitz is a great choice.
