Jo Anne McKnight: Tanner Williams Civic, Historical Society honors ...

Tanner Williams Civic and Historical Society sponsored its Ladies Classic Luncheon at the historic Tanner Williams School on May 7.

Guests had been encouraged to bring an item that had belonged to their mothers and then tell a story to accompany it. Included in the treasures were several Bibles, a 1933 home economics book, dishes, diaries, wedding and engagement rings, thimbles, crocheted doilies, embroidered dresser scarves and aprons made from bleached fertilizer sacks. The tellings that went along with the showings painted pictures of strong, loving mothers who worked hard, who read and sang to their children and who passed on a love for family that the current crop of mothers hope to have imparted to their own offspring.

The four oldest mothers present were recognized including Norma Waldress, 79; Voncile Kendrik, 80; Lois Pierce, 88; and Dot Pierce, 87.
