The SEO Yin and Yang of Google Disavow and Google Authorship

Clean Up Your Ashes With Google Disavow and Build Up Your Foundation With Google Authorship

While Search Engine Optimization (SEO) has drastically changed over the past years with the evolution of the ?social web?, your relationship with Google affects your online business in many ways. And if you have any online presence at all you are probably investing time and money in your Internet Marketing efforts.

Until a few months ago when the Google Penguin Update hit, many businesses relied on ?grey to black hat? (putting it politely) methods to get to the first page of Google. In a nutshell these methods including creating many automated links across the web considered to be ?low quality links? by Google. While it was once believed (know one knows for sure ? Google doesn?t tell us this stuff) that poor external links pointing to your site couldn?t hurt you, this now seems not to be the case. Google has even created a special tool to help you clean up your act.

Google Launches Disavow Tool to Discount Low Quality Links to Your Site

Why you may have thought this method was ?the bomb? for getting high visibility online, the full blast effects are now being felt by many,? and I can tell you, it?s not pretty.

Domains that were not totaled by Google, still have a chance of redeeming themselves, using the new Disavow Links Tool

The Google Disavow links tool is meant to help you define links or domains from which you would like to discount any low quality incoming links to your site and cannot remove them physically.

The tool help you give Google the same message as? using the ?nofollow? attribute to low quality incoming links to your site.? This means that these from these sites ?wont?s affect your site rank by passing page ranking credit to those sites according to Matt Cutts.

So if you have been paying someone to put up low quality links, you may have to pay them to get them ignored.. pretty ironic.

Every week I hear of a legit business horror story about how their rankings and domains took a hit and they have no idea why.

Ahhem, take a look in your webmaster tools or have someone do it for you. Keeping your head in the sand won?t improve your standing and rankings with Google.

And if you are in this position in the first place it means you are not really marketing yourself the way you should. Instead of paying for low quality links or their removal, invest your budget in marketing activities and events, create real links that have a better chance of being shared and getting engagement. Stop thinking about the Links!

Positive Versus Negative SEO

If you have ever taken the time to read the Google Webmaster Guidelines (and I strongly suggest you do), you will notice that Google specifies the positive actions you can take to improve your site?s authority with Google. It would be crazy to start listing all the no?s, focus on the ?yes?s? and you will do just fine.

Over the years many secret lists have been viral circulated around the inter-webs citing what not to do. As a Duru ? the guru of doing, I would much rather focus on what you should be doing!

Here is one area you should start implementing right away if you haven?t yet already. I?m talking about building your positive kudos with Google using Google Authorship!

Build Your Credibility with Google, Build Your Author Rank With Google Authorship AND Get Your Mug Noticed!

Google Authorship, first introduced in SMX 2011 and now in full gear thanks to Google Plus is a concept introduced by Google as part of their ranking algorithm, authority for profiles. Google Authorship ticks the box for two big Googledom concerns;

  1. You are legit? ? Google Authorship displays your profile mug as a thumbnail photo in search results. The easiest way to identify Google authorship is when you see an author photo show up next to a listing in the search results. This feature is highly integrated into Google Social Search. When your search results contain someone you follow, they are more likely to appear
  2. You are the owner of your content- Allows easy filtering of spam sites that scrape content and allow content publishers to take credit for their work and establish their ?Author Rank?. Google Authorship is the practice of linking your published content on the web to your Google Account. This way you get the publishing cred with Google and if your content is scraped, Google knows you are the originator of the content. This is also applicable if you are guest posting on another site, having an author-box with your Google Plus link in it is nice and dandy, but only if you are the official author of your page ? as in a site user that is either an author or contributor will get ?Author rank? for that post.
